2021 Geek-A-Long Sweater: Clue 23

Welcome to week 23! We have made it to the end of our charts! This week we’re paying homage to both Backgammon and Candy Land. I wanted to put Candy Land on this sweater so much. I had big plans (and big sketches) for it, but it wound up being one of the games that got edited out of the final version. It just wasn’t working on the body, but I couldn’t call this sweater done without at least mentioning it. So for this last section of charts we’re double dipping with our stripes to pay respect to backgammon at the center back and front edges, and the Candy Land kids’ sweaters across the shoulders.

With just one week left we’ll cap off this year’s sweater next week with some optional short rows, the collar, and the zipper join. This week you’ll be working a 10 row stripe section that features intarsia at the center back to switch the stripe color. Don’t over think that. Just twist the color you’re going to stop using together with the color you are about to use before you drop that first color right where it is and proceed with the 2nd. If you don’t want to deal with that you can also just choose 1 color for the stripe all the way across on rows 1-5 and use the second color for rows 6-10. Whatever floats your boat.

Next week’s post will be chock full of zipper instructions, and since there isn’t much to say about this week’s charts, I thought this would be a good time to share a little bit of the behind the scenes GAL process with you. Most years, and this year in particular, the sweater started out with sketches of what I wanted to consider putting on the charts. Jac tends to work by going straight to the chart software (we use EnvisioKnit Design Studio, if you’re wondering), and she has the incredible ability to picture something in her head and then just manifest it straight onto the chart. But I usually need to sketch first.

Great Chaotic Gritty, I just love those Candy Land kids so much. They are holding left hands. They are sporting a raging sugar high. Where are their guardians? My questions on this one are endless. I didn’t manage to get them on the main sweater, they didn’t quite fit the over all aestetic, but I think I’ll do a Candy Land theme sweater as a stand alone pattern at some point. TBH most of these games would make a killer stand alone. Anyone know the owner of Hasboro or Matel? They should hire me to do a licensed game pattern book XD
Obviously, not everything from my original list made the cut. To design this sweater I started by listing everything I thought of possibly working for the sweater and then started to sketch. The “winning” games were the ones where I could look at the sketch and see how it could fit on the sweater. Fun GAL trivia: The Clue ‘rope’ was one of the most difficult things to get right as a chart. It was just so hard to make it not look like a snake. We got there in the end though!

My tree has been up for over a week and I’m not remotely sorry.
