2021 Geek-A-Long Sweater: Clue 21

It is week 21, and it’s time to work some yoke decreases!

Before you start this week’s charts, please note that some errata was found in clue 20: step 4 of clue 20 the pattern written instructions stated to work sts 1-10, but the chart indicated to work sts 1-9. The chart was correct, but if you followed the written instructions and placed your marker based on having worked sts 1-10 you’ll want to move it back 1 st before starting clue 21 (that is marker 7). It’s most likely that you placed your markers based on following the chart, but just in case you didn’t you can spot check the marker placement as you work through the first row of clue 21.

The decreases are worked for raglan shaping, which means they will occur on the outside edges of the sleeves (where the sleeves meet the back and front) and run in a diagonal line up towards the collar. Raglan seams are my favorite, though I most often design with a circle yoke. But the raglan makes for a really nice fit with the double thick fabric and boxy shape.

While we’re here, talking about decreases, it’s a good time to remind you that we have double knitting decrease tutorials available! There are 2 primary ways to decrease double knitting, and you can use whichever you’re most comfortable with on the yoke. I used the cable decrease.

We are rounding on the end of the sweater (can you believe it?! – I can’t). This is clue 21, and we’ll finish up our Ouija Board and continue the decreases next week. Clue 23 will contain the last board game homage (though it’s a double reference in 1 chart!) and clue 24 will contain the finishing instructions (collar, zipper, etc). You should start thinking now about how you want to handle the zipper (you can skip it and wear the sweater open, or go rogue and add a button band, whatever floats your boat). If you are going to add a zipper this is a good time to start thinking about ordering one. You’ll want a heavier weight zipper than you would normally add to a sweater. This is double thick and going with a lightweight (zipper manufacturers usually call that a sport weight zipper) it won’t be able to handle the weight of your On Board.

Next week I’m going to post specific zipper details and include tips on shopping for one, but this week you should at least decide how long you want your zipper to be. I went with a zipper that’s shorter than the actual front of the sweater, I think it looks nicer that way. I used a 16″ zipper and it runs from the top of the checker board at the hem of the sweater to just below the dominos. You can certainly opt for a longer one if you want, but I wouldn’t recommend going shorter than 16″.

The most important thing is that you need a separating zipper. Funny story: not paying attention to that, the first one I ordered was not a separating zipper, and you’d have had to put the sweater on like a pullover XD. Anyhow, more on zippers next week, though the spoiler I’ll give you is that I’m not going to tell you to use a sewing machine (though if you feel more proficient with one than me you are certainly welcome to use it!). The zipper tutorial will be for hand sewing.
