2022 Geek-A-Long: Stray – Project Sheet

Welcome to the 4th and final 2022 Geek-A-Long Sock Project: Stray Socks!

If you are just joining us, you can find projects 1-3 here: Oregon Trail Socks; Legend of Zelda Socks; Pokémon Socks. We’ve reach the final Geek-A-Long project for 2022 (don’t worry, the GAL will be back again in 2023!). The project sheet is available for download now, and has yarn info and the swatch pattern to get you started and ready to knit when the first clue drops.

For our final project of the 2022 Geek-A-Long, we wanted to do something cozy. Though a different kind of hard from 2020 and 2021, 2022 has been a lot, and Jac and I have both gotten very into dissociating through Cozy Video Games recently. If you’re new to the genre, those are video games that don’t really ask a lot out of you. They are fun and whimsical, but they are meant to be easy games that you can pick up and put down whenever you want. We love that vibe. Jac has been obsessed with playing Stray (I’m more of a Cult of the Lamb girl, myself) so we are capping off the 2022 GAL with an homage to our favorite adventuring cat with the Stray Socks.

We got some great feedback this year that folks have loved the socks, but wish that a whole socks-worth of pattern could drop at once (rather than the leg one week and the foot the week after). We’ve heard you, and for this last pair of the 2022 GAL we are doing just that. The pattern for sock 1 will release on October 23 and the pattern for the second sock will drop on November 6.

Jac mentioned this last week, but we decided not to do a kit for this pair. The kits were really fun, but it’s been a lot of bags and markers and we don’t want you to burn out on those. I mean, yeah, we can all always use another bag and more markers, but there is a limit to how many any given person wants in a short period of time. We used Marigold, Cyborg, and Witchlight on Vacation Yarn for our sample pair, and we’ve made sure that tons of those are in stock as of right now. And as with all patterns, this one will not self-destruct when it sees you using yarn other than ours, so please enjoy the pattern with whatever yarn makes you happy.

No matter what yarn you use, remember to take a photo and change to grayscale to ensure you have enough contrast. The socks call for 3 colors, and only A and B (Marigold and Cyborg in the sample) need to contrast sharply. The 3rd color (Witchlight in the photo) is used for the cuff, heel, and toe.

You’ll note on the project sheet for this pair, that the swatch calls for casting on 88 stitches, not 80. This isn’t a typo and the gauge hasn’t changed from prior pairs. I just wanted a bigger cozy so I could fit it on my water bottle. If you’d rather do the standard 80 stitch swatch, just black out the first and last columns of the chart (so the swatch chart is 20 stitches instead of 22) and proceed.

View Stray: Project Sheet by clicking the button below. When you download the pattern from our website instead of through Ravelry, you will NOT receive automatic updates. You will have to come here and download the next clue every time. Please download it via Ravelry if you are able, so you have immediate access to the clues as they are released and any errata that may appear.
