Fillorian Crest Mitts

I didn’t intend to knit these mitts. It all began when I started to watch The Magicians again from season one — a moment of silence for another SyFy show that was cancelled too soon. Instead of knitting while I was watching it, I accidentally resurrected an old design Megan-Anne and I had worked on for a cardi a couple years ago and never released. We misplaced the math portion of the pattern, but still had the charts. Now that sweater lives again as a pair of handwarmers, which I accidentally casted on. And now you can too!

“Hello, glorious audience. It is I, Ember, god of Fillory. Feel free to bow and grovel. I’ll wait. I, with minor help from my brother Umber R.I.P., created a world intricate as filigree, and that is what I called it, except I was a bit drunk, so Fillory.”

Ember from season 2, episode 13 of The Magicians

Do you have the urge to eat tiny cakes, sip Earl Grey, and unleash whimsical chaos unto the world? Then, might I entice you, glorious knitter, to make a pair of mitts that would do Ember, god of Fillory, proud. While these mitts may not be as intricate as filigree, if you become drunk enough, it will become Fillory.

About the Pattern

Inspired by the book trilogy and television show, The Magicians, the Fillorian Crest mitts are worked in the round with stranded knitting, using either long circular needles to work in Magic Loop or DPNs. This fingerless glove pattern is recommended for knitters who have experience with stranded colorwork, knitting in the round, and reading charts.

Recommended Yarn: Three skeins of Lattes & Llamas Interlude Yarn (100 grams/ 438 yards) or a comparable fingering weight yarn in three contrasting colorways.

Sample is shown in ‘Dammit Wesley’ as Color A, ‘Palpatine’ as Color B, and ‘Mrs. Hudson’ as Color C.

  • Color A: 26 grams/ 114 yards
  • Color B: 6 grams/ 27 yards
  • Color C: 24 grams/ 106 yards

Note that yardage is estimated and may vary depending on yarn used, gauge variations, or modifications.

Needles: US1 / 2.25 mm to work in Magic Loop or size needed to obtain gauge.

I prefer the Magic Loop method when knitting mitts. If you are more comfortable using DPNs or two circulars, this pattern is easily converted.

Sizing: One Size: 8.5 inches long and 8 inches in circumference after blocking.

Instructions are included to modify the size of your mitts by going up or down a needle size.

Because of the colors I chose to help invoke the crest featuring Ember and Umber, The Fillorian Crest mitts have strong knights of the round table vibes or even that of a renaissance faire. I spent most of my time knitting them dreaming of going to the PA Ren Faire the moment there was a brisk autumn chill in the airs. I was going to be the one with a glass of honey mead in one hand and little box of Scotch eggs in the other. Sadly, life has other plans. With there being no vaccine for small children Mabel’s age and Megan-Anne’s autoimmune disorder, we didn’t feel safe risking it this year. Which really sucks. Normally, we make a big family trip out of it. The Fillorian Crest mitts take away a little bit of the sting though — along with that shipment of honey mead we ordered **eyebrow wiggle** — I get to walk around with a little bit of those Ren Faire vibes on my hands. Now, if I could just work up the courage to learn how to make Scotch eggs…

I don’t know how we managed to lose the pattern/math for the cardi, but we did. That thing was beautiful and extra as hell.
