Cat Nouveau Mitts

I wear my Cat Nouveau Cowl just about every time I leave the house these days, so I thought it was about time I designed some matching fingerless mitts! Some people might say that’s a bit much, but I say that sometimes you just need everyone to know that you adore black cats and being comfy.

The Cat Nouveau Mitts go up the arm a bit more than my previous designs, The Pact and Moonlit Magic. They aren’t quite opera length, but I felt like they needed the drama.

With Le Chat Noir style cats on the backs of the hands, an Art Deco inspired motif on the palm, and a complementary accent on the wrist, the Cat Nouveau Mitts are worked in the round with stranded knitting, using either long circular needles to work in Magic Loop or DPNs.

About the Pattern

This pattern is recommended for knitters who have experience with stranded colorwork, knitting in the round, and reading charts.

Recommended Yarn: Three skeins of Lattes & Llamas Interlude Yarn (100 grams/ 438 yards) or a comparable fingering weight yarn in three contrasting colorways. Sample is shown in ‘Stars Hollow’ as Color A, ‘Miss Patty’ as Color B, and ‘In Omnia Paratus’ as Color C.

  • Color A: 25 grams/ 110 yards
  • Color B: 20 grams/ 88 yards
  • Color C: 20 grams/ 88 yards

When choosing your yarn, make sure that Colors B and C contrast strongly with Color A. I recommend taking a photograph of the yarns together, and then changing it into black and white to see if the colors contrast strongly enough.

Needles: US1 / 2.25 mm to work in Magic Loop or size needed to obtain gauge.

I prefer the Magic Loop method when knitting mitts. If you are more comfortable using DPNs or two circulars, this pattern is easily converted.

Sizing: One Size — 9.25 inches long and 8 inches in circumference after blocking. Instructions are included to modify the size of your mitts by going up or down a needle size.

While writing this post, it occurred to me that I never shared the release of my Wild Magic or Raven Queen mitts with you. Ooops! You can check them out on Ravelry by following those links. They’re super cool, and I’ll do a full write up about them later in the month.

~ Jac

While I do feel like the cat on my mitts are silently judging me, they do make me more productive while I work at my computer.
