Want to be the smartest person in the room? Play a Wizard. Sure you had to spend a decade learning to cast spells like those cheaters, the Sorcerer and the Warlock, but you’ll certainly know more about magic than anyone else. And if by some chance there is someone who knows more, you have options: you could silence them and answer first; you could distract them with dazzling lights; or, if you need to, you can just cast fireball and becomes the smartest living person there. Of course, it is that kind of thinking that leads lesser minds to envy and fear you.
There is nothing more iconic to fantasy games than the spell caster, and it’s just fun to be able to do everything from cleaning your clothes to making enemies see their worst nightmares. You can also ramp your Barbarian friend into a whirling force of great sword based destruction using spells like Haste. As a Wizard, you can tell an artifact from a forgery and predict the future with precision. Throwing lightning is just fun. The downside is that you have the endurance of a wet rag. But hey, that’s what Fighters are for!
My husband loves to give his NPC wizards weird eccentricities. The one our friends loved most was the older gentleman who lived in a Chicken footed tower with a massive telescope on top. He was a master of Divination and was called the Lavender Mage since he had accidentally dyed himself a lovely lavender color during a wizard duel in his youth. He also had an iron golem dressed as his man servant. He was helpful, but his services were costly and he smelled faintly of flowers. I don’t think anyone in that game will ever forget him. One of the players was kind enough to draw it, once he had stopped laughing about it.

Can everyone stop overreacting? It was just a fireball! It’s called ‘splash-damage’ you babies. Suck it up or go whine to the Cleric.
