2020 Geek-A-Long: Barbarian

I would like to rage.

Grog Strongjaw

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAh!

Okay, now that all the enemies are down and there’s nothing left to hit but teammates, let me tell you about how awesome barbarians are. There is just something incredibly fun about being the big slab of a character that has a great sword the size of a small car and runs at the enemies while also shrugging off all the damage. Plus, the way you can reroll all the ones and twos on damage dice means that your DPS (damage per second) is going to get out of hand fast. You can play them with low intelligence or you can play them with genius intellects, but in the end it all comes down to “Hulk Smash.”

There have been well known barbarians like Grog from Critical Role, some Amazons, the berserkers of Scotland, and Conan, who it might be argued is more of a fighter. The barely-clad, armorless warrior is a favorite archetype because it invokes the primal rage inside of us. I have played barbarians who were explorers and bureaucrats, but when it came time to kick some ass, they leave that all behind and wreck their enemies until there are none left to be wrecked. So go ahead and grab 2d6, or 1d12 if you are a half orc and charge at the enemy with reckless abandon. Who cares if the bard says this is a trap? It’s probably their fault you are in this mess to begin with. Someone’s got to save their delicate hide.

Whether you’re knitting, crocheting, or cross stitching this square, you can download the Barbarian pattern here. Instructions and charts for both knit and crochet are listed in the pattern. When you’re finished making it, don’t forget to Instagram your squares at us @lattesandllamasyarn with the hashtag #geekalong! Want to hang out with other people making the blanket? You can find moral support in the Geek-A-Long group on Ravelry here.

My family often refers to me as Jac-Attack the Barbarian, which is why my handle is @jac_attacking on Instagram. You know, just to give you a real glimpse into who I am as a person.
