2018 Geek-A-Long: Stargate SG-1 Revisited

week 6 Sam Carter (2)

In 2015, during our year of Mad Scientists, we released a square honoring Lt. Colonel Samantha Carter. While she might not have been a “mad scientist” per say, she was a theoretical astrophysicist, Air Force Officer, and queen of snappy comebacks. I know I shared this quote in the original post three years ago, but I think it bares sharing again.

Sam Carter: I’m an Air Force officer just like you are, Colonel. And just because my reproductive organs are on the inside instead of the outside, doesn’t mean I can’t handle whatever you can handle.

Jack O’Neill: Oh, this has nothing to do with you being a woman. I like women. I’ve just got a little problem with scientists.

  1. Sam Carter: Colonel, I logged over 100 hours in enemy airspace during the Gulf War. Is that tough enough for you… Or are we gonna have to arm wrestle?

I can’t tell you how many people have requested more Stargate SG-1 over the years. I’ve lost count. It even made it fairly high on the leaderboard in the Fight for Your Fandom thread on Ravelry. Arminty made the official nomination this year saying:

Stargate SG-1! One of the glyphs, Jaffa symbols, or the gate itself.

  1. At the time, this was the longest running Sci-fi show and it had a huge following (still does!).
  2. Spawned numerous other Stargate series but none lived up to the original.
  3. Richard Dean Anderson!
  4. Awesomely independent and strong female characters.

The original square features a stylized version of Sam’s Senior Space Operations Badge over the Earth glyph. (The other two squares shown in the pictures above are Princess Bubblegum from Adventure Time and Hang Zoe’s Wings of Freedom from Attack on Titan.) For the revisited square, I created the Jaffa mark, which adorns dream boat Teal’c of Chulak’s forehead.

All Jaffa, an offshoot of genetically engineered humans, have a mark on their foreheads signifying the Goa’uld to whom they serve. Most Jaffa have the mark tattooed in black, but higher ranked Jaffa like Teal’c have more ornate marks done in either silver or gold. The process makes tattooing look like a walk in the park. The mark is made by cutting into the flesh and then pouring pure molten silver or gold into the wound. Nice, right?

There are over 30 known Goa’uld symbols, each one representing a god. And by gods I actually mean sentient parasitic beings that take over hosts, but that’s a discussion for another day. The Jaffa mark on the forehead of Teal’c and on today’s square represents Apophis. Apophis was one of the most powerful of the Goa’uld and the nemesis of SG-1, which is why we’re all super happy that Teal’c defected and joined the team.
