2016 Geek-A-Long: Portal

When I posted this week’s spoiler pic on Ravelry, Bookwyrm guessed Portal right away. Although, she had trouble believing though we would make a third Portal square. (You can find the 2014 squares here and here.)

All I can think of, looking at it, is Portal. But since there were already 2 square options for Portal in 2014, I’m not holding out hope that I’m right.

Ha! I won’t apologize for trotting out Portal again. I think it’s the best! I stumbled on Portal by accident when my ex bought the Orange Box for Half-Life 2. I was perusing the games and hadn’t heard of Portal when I started playing it. At first, I thought the game was weird, but then it sucked me in and I just couldn’t walk away. I skipped class and called out of work and played it through in one sitting. I think I played it three or four times in one month, trying to find the most efficient and “perfect” ways to get through each puzzle.

Kev and I have been meaning to play the two player mode of Portal 2 since it came out, but we haven’t gotten around to it yet. We both played it solo, and I still get goosebumps thinking about that scene when GLaDOS reforms. I’m not able to put my finger on why she is so scary as a video game villain, but clearly the brilliant minds at Valve know what makes me tick and how to freak me out.

In addition to my near pathological need to put Portal on as many GAL blankets as possible, It was voted into the top five games on our 2016 Leaderboards. Bourbongirl nominated Portal saying

It’s the only game I enjoy listening to in the background because it’s got such great humor
