2016 Geek-A-Long: Duck Hunt

12 Duck Hunt 2

I am one month older than Duck Hunt. It was first released in Japan on April 21, 1984 and that means we’re both pretending like we’re still 29 until our younger brother, Contra*, catches up and becomes our “older” brother. Duck Hunt and I look way too good to be 32.

So good in fact, my mom still has the original NES we used to play as kids. Every Thanksgiving, which is the only time me and my siblings seem to be in the same state at the same time, we dust off the old NES, blow into the Duck Hunt cartridge a few times, and then battle for supremacy. Sometimes we even make a tournament chart and things get heated fast, especially since we’re older now and switched out our root beer floats for Not Your Father’s Root Beer Floats. My poor, only child, husband wasn’t ready for our level of competitiveness when I first brought him home to Indiana. And he thought the laughing dog was bad…

In a weird twist of fate, Megan-Anne and I were remiss in adding Duck Hunt to the blanket this year. I’m still not sure how we missed it. My only excuse is that there are SO MANY great video games out there, and it’s hard to remember all of them. Luckily, RobinWknits on Ravelry had our back. During the Fight For Your Fandom, Robin nominated the video game and it received enough votes to take 9th place on the Leaderboard:

It’s a classic that helped start the video game revolution.

*My “older” brother’s name isn’t actually Contra, but he’s basically Contra in my eyes. He is an Army Veteran, who served several tours in the war. He didn’t like to talk about his experiences, so in my mind he became a one man army, taking out bad dudes one fireball at a time. I found the image oddly comforting.
