Frog Lilies

First and foremost, it appears as if the link to purchase Megan-Anne’s “Read Banned Books” cowl pattern was broken. You can check out the original post here. It has since been fixed, but here is that link again just in case: Click here to purchase the Read Banned Books Cowl now!

Alright, and now for a couple of grumpy frogs.

Your eyes are not deceiving you. I made mitts AND mittens!

Frog Lilies is a two-in-one pattern where you can either keep your fingers free with mitts or keep knitting to create mittens. This pattern features a frilly picot edge at the cuff and a frog pond done in stranded colorwork around the hand. These grumpy frogs’ blushing cheeks and whites of their eyes are added afterwards with duplicate stitch.

About the Mitts and Mittens

Frog Lilies are worked in the round with stranded knitting. This pattern is recommended for knitters who have experience with stranded colorwork, knitting in the round, and reading charts.

Recommended Yarn: Four skeins of Lattes & Llamas Vacation Yarn (100 grams/ 463 yards) or a comparable fingering weight yarn in four contrasting colorways.

Samples are shown in ‘Archdruid’ as Color A, ‘Baskerville’ as Color B, ‘My Warlock Girlfriend’ as Color C, and ‘Stars Hollow’ as Color D.

  • Yardage Requirements for the Mitts:
    • Color A: 26 grams/ 121 yards
    • Color B: 2 grams/ 10 yards
    • Color C: 2 grams/ 10 yards
    • Color D: 20 grams/ 93 yards
  • Yardage Requirements for the Mittens:
    • Color A: 34 grams/ 158 yards
    • Color B: 2 grams/ 10 yards
    • Color C: 2 grams/ 10 yards
    • Color D: 32 grams/ 148 yards

When choosing your yarn, make sure that Color A contrasts strongly with Color D while Color B contrasts strongly with Color C. I recommend taking a photograph of the yarns together, and then changing it into black and white to see if the colors contrast strongly enough.

Needles:

US2 / 2.75 mm to work in Magic Loop or size needed to obtain gauge and US1/ 2.25 mm DPNs to work the mitten thumbs.

Sizing: Mitts One Size: 8.5 inches long and 8 inches in circumference after blocking.

Mittens One Size: 12 inches long and 8 inches in circumference after blocking.

My favorite part about these fingerless mitts / mittens are the pink cheeks on the grumpy frogs. I added it afterwards using duplicate stitch. My second favorite part is the frilly picot edge. I suppose you could easily omit it if it isn’t your cup of tea, but it really leans into the whole frog pond look. Like it’s a little lily pad around your wrist.

A special thank you to everyone who reached out to us after Megan-Anne shared the news in one of the previous Pokemon clues. We had another death in the family over the weekend, so we’re taking things day by day right now, doing our best to catch up on orders and get the shop running again.
