Welcome to Hot Girl Summer! This sweater is warm. This double knit behemoth is going to make for a hot knitter summer, no matter what your gender identity is. On the upside, we can all celebrate Toasty Girl WinterTM in it when we’re done.
It is international Megan-Anne week! My birthday is tomorrow, and what better way to celebrate than by starting the body of our Geek-A-Long Sweaters? I started the festivities early this year by taking Mabel the Merciless to New York for her first visit to the American Girl store. It was just as magical and we had an amazing time. I’ve been dreaming of living vicariously through her with a trip to that store since the day I found out I was expecting. We kept the party going with a family date at Becky’s Drive In, and a special birthday edition of D&D. If you’re in the area, I can’t over recommend Becky’s Drive In. It’s a great way to see movies with younger kids that have trouble sitting still for the full feature, it’s outdoors and well suited for social distancing, and also they have funnel cakes. Funnel. Cakes. I’ll get the photos of our summer fun together and put together a post to share them in the next few weeks. About once a year I like to post photographic evidence that I do put down my yarn and go outside occasionally. Should I ever need to prove it in court or something. ;)
This week is the last time we’ll be working the red and black checker boards, and you can see the bottom of the Monopoly man just beginning to emerge. Uncle Money Bags was the only pre-clue spoiler I revealed this year, so I’m excited to start revealing him. Before you dig into the action though, you’ll want to plan your stitch markers. In related news, we now sell my hand made stitch markers! I make them in small batches, and it’s safe to assume most will not be restocked. I’ll update the listings periodically as I make new sets, and I’ll try to be better about posting on the blog when I do.
The next 9 clues will rely heavily on the markers you place during clue 7. I strongly recommend color coding your markers if you can, to make tracking the charts as simple as possible while working the body.
All future sections before the sleeve join will follow this structure:
- A 4 st repeat to marker 1.
- A 40 st chart to marker 2.
- A 16 st repeat to marker 3.
- A 48 st chart to marker 4.
- A 16 st chart to maker 5.
- A 40 st chart to marker 6.
- A 4 st repeat to end.
You can color code your markers to indicate what part of the chart you’ll be working. So, for example, let’s say you used 2 blue, 2 green, and 2 purple markers: Use blue for markers 1 & 6, green for markers 2 & 5, and purple for markers 3 &4. The main thing you’ll be tracking is that you work the 48 st chart at the center back (between your purple markers), a 40 stitch chart on the fronts (between the blue and green makers, and a 16 stitch repeat between the green and purple markers. Most of the time that 16 stitch repeat will be something that doesn’t require careful attention to the chart, so it’s easy to zone out a bit and accidentally work too many repeats. But if you get in the mindset of always checking your chart when you see a certain color marker it helps keep things on track.

I really enjoy being old enough that no one expects a wild party anymore. Eating the whole funnel cake is wild enough.
