The Sweater Vest of Socks

When I originally sat down with a new Mini Vacation Yarn Set, eager to design a textured sock that would use all five of the minis, I had planned to call the socks “Feywild.” After I started knitting them, my husband teased me and called them “The Sweater Vest of Socks,” and I have to say that he was right. These socks don’t embody the land of the Fey. Theses socks wear spectacles and study the esoteric nature of the Feywild.

The Sweater Vest of Socks were designed for you to have fun with mini-skeins or stash bust those leftover balls of fingering weight yarn while maintaining the stuffy dignity of academia. While these socks don’t have elbows to put patches on or pockets to protect, they still convey the air of wandering through halls of knowledge in search for the “good” coffee machine.

About the Pattern

The Sweater Vest of Socks are worked in the round from the cuff down using either long circular needles to work in Magic Loop or DPNs. This pattern is recommended for knitters with experience working in the round, striping, and turning a heal. The instructions are written for five colorways, but the pattern is easily adapted to use two or more colors, making it a great scrappy project.

Recommended Yarn: 1(1, 2, 2) Lattes & Llamas Mini-Vacation Yarn Set (100 grams/ 463 yards total; 20 grams/ 92 yards each) or a comparable fingering weight yarn in five colorways. Sample is shown in ‘Crowned Prince of Faerie’.

  • Color A: 14(16, 18, 20) grams/ 65(74, 83, 92) yards
  • Color B: 12(14, 16, 18) grams/ 56(65, 74, 83) yards
  • Color C: 18(20, 26, 28) grams/ 83(92, 120, 129) yards
  • Color D: 9(10, 16, 18) grams/ 42(46, 74, 83) yards
  • Color E: 9(10, 18, 20) grams/ 42(46, 83, 92) yards

Note that yardage is estimated and may vary depending on yarn used, gauge variations, or modifications.

Needles: US1 / 2.25 mm to work in Magic Loop or size needed to obtain gauge.

I prefer the Magic Loop method when knitting socks. If you are more comfortable using DPNs or two circulars, this pattern is easily converted.

Sizing: 7(8, 9, 10) inch foot circumference.

These socks were a lot of fun to knit. They were the perfect project to work on while I played D&D with my family or when I was watching a show the required a bit more focus than colorwork would allow. I actually ended up casting on a second pair for my little sister recently. I was too impatient to wait a day to get more yarn from L&L’s studio one night and ended up casting on with leftovers I had on hand.

The blues she and I picked out do NOT photograph at all. It’s so frustrating. The lighter blue is actually turquoise in real life. TURQUOISE! And the darker one is actually super bright and cheery. It doesn’t have the icy, stone vibes that it does in pictures. But she loves them so far, and that’s all that truly matters.

My sister has what we affectionately call “big ol’ clompers.” She’s significantly taller than me and Megan-Anne.
