In 2014, we released a square honoring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, featuring the masks of all four heroes in a half-shell. While I do go cowabunga for the original, I thought that for our final throwback square of the year we would let everyone declare their righteous dude in yarn! The new square, which you’ll get to see in the pattern, features one portrait of a ninja turtle. Simply choose blue for Leo, red for Raphael, orange for Mikey, or purple for Donnie to be the complementing color (CC) to the green main color (MC).
The TMNT are largely representative of my childhood. I saw the movies in theaters. I then watched the movies one million times on VHS. I religiously watched the cartoons and had the action figures, the van, and the submarine. Actually, they all belonged to my brother, but we played with them together so it didn’t really matter. What DID matter was that in the late 80s/ early 90s my mother refused to purchase TMNT undies for me every single time we went to Kmart.
HER: But Jacquline, those are for boys.
ME: So what. I don’t care.
HER: No, Jacquline. You don’t understand. They have a special pocket-hole in the front. They’re just for boys.
ME, completely unphased: I don’t care. It’ll still fit my butt. Let me put my butt in it!
A few decades later and I still have not forgiven my mother for this travesty or the makers of children’s underwear in the 80s and early 90s.
Whether you’re knitting, crocheting, or cross stitching this square, you can download the TMNT Revisited pattern here. Instructions and charts for both knit and crochet are listed in the pattern. When you’re finished making it, don’t forget to Instagram your squares at us @lattesandllamasyarn with the hashtag #geekalong!
If you’re having trouble with double-sided knitting, we have a how-to video here and a tutorial on crochet here. Want to hang out with other people making the blanket? You can find moral support in the Geek-A-Long group on Ravelry here.

In my mother’s defense, I don’t think I’d get them for my daughter after she screamed, “let me put my butt in it,” as loud as she could.

Where is your pattern for Teenage Mutant Blanket? I have searched every where on your website and can not find the pattern. I want the pattern for a friend.

We don’t have a whole blanket of the TMNT. There is the one afghan square on this page by clicking the link “TMNT Revisited” towards the bottom of the post. To download the old one with the masks, you’ll need to follow the link at the top of the post, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” to access that one.
