Neil Gaiman was nominated to join the other 2018 Geek-A-Long squares by ShazzaVicky in the Fight For Your Fandom thread on Ravelry:
I’d also like to put forward Neil Gaiman
- American Gods, Stardust, Sandman Comics, Good Omens (written with the late and great Terry Pratchett), Coraline (to name a few of his works)
- He was born in the UK
- Just read the books or watch some of the movies and TV series that have been made out of his works
- He wrote one of the BEST Doctor Who episodes ‘The Doctor’s Wife’
Megan-Anne and I couldn’t resist running with Coraline for the square. It’s our favorite, and the Stars Hollow and Big Bird colorways were perfect for her.
Since I’m busing moving this weekend, Kevin (also known as Megan-Anne’s Mr. Llama), offered to talk about Neil Gaiman for me. I’m actually posting this via my smart phone right now. My computer is under a pile of boxes and my desk is in pieces. So, without further ado, Kevin’s thoughts on Neil Gaiman!
Neil Gaiman had a lamp post that he put in the middle of the woods. He really does. Sometimes people come over to his house and do photo-shoots in the snow. It’s an amazing and magical piece of reality that is exactly what you would expect of the author of Coraline, The Graveyard Book, and Blueberry Girl.
Of course, he’s also written many books and comics aimed at adults as well. Sandman is a comic book that many people consider one of the best of all time. His work with artists like Dave McKean, Colleen Doran, Charles Vess, and P. Craig Russell have produced some of the most beautiful comic books I have ever seen. He has also written some great comics like 1402 and Books of Magic, and even wrote a comic based on Alice Cooper.
On top of all this, he is also the author of amazing novels such as American Gods, and co-wrote Good Omens with Terry Pratchett. Both of those are currently being made in to TV shows with Gaiman acting as the head writer for Good Omens, which will star David Tennant and John Hamm.
Gaiman is also a positive influence on social media and podcasts. He’s an interesting person and seems like a genuinely kind soul. Sometimes it’s easy to think he might be over-hyped by the nerd crowd. But his work has had an enormous impact on people in their teens who feel like they weren’t made to fit in with the rest of the world. His stories talk about finding yourself, especially when the rest of the world doesn’t make any sense. And that is one of the reasons that I adore Neil Gaiman.
