2018 Geek-A-Long: Robin

We hadn’t planned to revisit Nightwing since I was happy with how it turned out. I like the bats at the top, symbolizing Dick Grayson’s ever present relationship issues with Batman. And it also symbolizes how after he’s able to become his own man, he actually takes on the Batman mantle for a while. But after we released the square, which wasn’t too long ago since it was featured as the last square in 2017, a few people had some extremely valid points for how that last square should not have been Nightwing. While I don’t regret my choices, because Dick Grayson is my one true love, I will admit that maybe it was a bit short sighted of us.

We put Beast Boy and his pal Cyborg on the 2017 blanket.

Then there was Starfire

And Raven.

Heck, we had minor characters from Teen Titans featured on the 2017 blanket, such as Kid Flash and Mas y Menos, but no Robin. And just to throw a little salt on the no-boy-wonder-wounds, members of last years Geek-A-Long Guild even got a bonus square of Teen Titans Tower! In my defense, Dick Grayson was always much happier as Nightwing, but I understand why people might’ve flipped a few tables when they didn’t see the missing piece of the Teen Titans puzzle. So, this is our official apology and penance.

Sorry about that, guys.

I tried to recreate the same sort of portrait style that I did for Cyborg, Starfire, Raven, and Beast Boy, so that Robin will be ready to match the rest of his team. And, just because I feel as if I should mention this, Robin will return to the GAL in another form next year. There have been at least five different people to carry the Robin mantle as Batman’s sidekick, and each one has their own unique story and tragedy, so I’ll save their backstories for another day. Tonight, I hope you enjoy this revisited square.

Whether you’re knitting, crocheting, or cross stitching this square, you can download the Robin – A Nightwing Revisit pattern here. Instructions and charts for both knit and crochet are listed in the pattern. When you’re finished making it, don’t forget to Instagram your squares at us @lattesandllamasyarn with the hashtag #geekalong!

If you’re having trouble with double-sided knitting, we have a how-to video here and a tutorial on crochet here. Want to hang out with other people making the blanket? You can find moral support in the Geek-A-Long group on Ravelry here.

Megan-Anne was like, “How are you going to sneak a Batman related square onto the blanket this year since you gave up control?” Oh ye, of little faith. I will keep my promise.

      Good catch, Trudy! Thanks :D

The other day I signed a check with 2008 as the year. Lately, I can’t seem to remember WHEN I am.

I found your blog about a month ago. I had been looking for a lego pattern for quite awhile. I completed 2 squares. First one is definitely the learning curve one. I am happy with second one. I started a third I think will use as fronts on pillows. I don’t have instagram, so can’t share pic. Thanks so much for pattern and the tutorial video is well done. I learned a new knitting technique. I appreciate your time and effort for posting on your blog

Yay! I’m really glad you decided to go back and make a robin head. I’m joining the blanket together now, but I’m planning on extracting the nightwing section to replace with robin. Not sure what I’ll do with therandom extra square but I’ll think of something!
