2017 Geek-A-Long: Captain America

Knock. Knock.

Who’s there?

FREEDOM.

In case you’ve been underneath a rock since Captain America: The First Avenger released in 2011, here is the low down on Cap’s three titled movies:

Steve Rogers, just another kid from Brooklyn, becomes a real hero instead of just a walking propaganda poster in order to save his best friend Bucky.

The Winter Soldier:
Captain America, a newly unfrozen and sexy all-American man, says to himself, “Man, some serious stuff is going down, but Bucky is in trouble. I should probably just focus on him and do my best not to touch a hair on his pretty head, even though he’s trying to murder me.”

Civil War (AKA Unofficial Iron Man 4):
YOU KNOW WHAT. I LOVE YOU, BUCKY. I AM GOING TO WAR OVER YOU, BABE.

In all seriousness though, Steve Rogers is a sweetheart and loyal friend to the end. He essentially took up the Captain America mantle in order to rescue his best friend and even though it takes him over 70 years to finish what he set out to do, he rescues Bucky Barnes. [SPOILERS AHEAD] At the end of Civil War, Tony Stark thinks he’s hurting Steve by making him give up his mantle, but in reality, his mission is over. He did what he set out to do. And if that doesn’t make your heart melt, I don’t know what will.

My theory, which you should ignore if you don’t like spoilers and want to watch future MCU movies without this knowledge, is that Steve Rogers will become Nomad for a while. In the 1970 comics, after Captain America becomes disillusioned, he abandons his red, white, and blue uniform in favor of a dark blue and yellow one without any patriotic markings on it. He wears a cape and looks silly, but the idea is that he’s fighting for human decency, not just a flag. I think we can all agree that’s pretty much where he’s at after the events of Civil War.

In the comics, Steve’s time as Nomad is short lived. And if the MCU decides to go that route in the upcoming movies, my guess is that they’ll wrap it up and have his cute butt back in tight red, white, and blue spandex by the time Avengers: Infinity War debuts.

Whether you’re knitting, crocheting, or cross stitching this square, you can download the Captain America pattern here. Instructions and charts for both knit and crochet are listed in the pattern. When you’re finished making it, don’t forget to Instagram your squares at us @lattesandllamasyarn with the hashtag #geekalong!

If you’re having trouble with double-sided knitting, we have a how-to video here and a tutorial on crochet here. Want to hang out with other people making the blanket? You can find moral support in the Geek-A-Long group on Ravelry here.

My favorite thing about Captain America is when he jumps and hides behind his shield. He basically transforms into a blue turtle shell from Mario Kart.

I love this pattern! I also love the fact that you planned it for three colors instead of making me figure out for myself the best place to swap the red and blue. ;)
