2016 Geek-A-Long: Skyrim

36 Skyrim 3

Skyrim — or as I like to call it, Flower Picking Simulator — is an open world role playing game filled with action and dragons… and lot’s of inventory management.

I have yet to actually beat Skyrim. I have spent hundreds of hours playing the game, doing everything from hunting dragons and giants across the land to picking flowers. So many flowers. I spent at least a fifth of that time sorting through the thousands of items I stored all around my in-game-home in order to perfect my Daedric armor and weapons. PRO TIP: You can set your character to sneak into a corner so he’ll spend all day gaining points in stealth while you go to work. I may or may not have done this more than I’d like to admit. But after all of this, I have yet to go into the final fight with Alduin, the World Eater at the Throat of the World.

The game is amazing. I loved the titanic battles and exploration of the beautiful landscape while navigating between political choices to prevent the North from falling into yet another war. There were times I would climb mountains just so I could see how beautiful the valley below was. (Something I have never done IRL.) The main point of the game is to hunt and kill the massive dragons that terrorize the towns and plan on destroying the world. By killing them you can absorb their power and unleash words that reverberate with power.

36 Skyrim 2

Like any game made by Bethesda, there is so much to explore that it’s easy to forget you have the fate of the entire world in your hands. Every Elder Scrolls game is worth buying whenever there is a sale on Steam. But be warned, Skyrim is a beautiful game that can take over your life for a few months. It will give you whole new appreciation for stopping on your way to save a town from a hoard of undead, so that you can spend twenty minutes to grab butterflies and pick sprigs of lavender.

This makes me so happy. I think the Elder Scrolls games are my absolute favorites, possibly second only to Dragon Age. (I have yet to decide which series I prefer.) And like you, I haven’t beat this (or any Elder Scrolls game) yet because I’m too busy crafting or leveling or collecting random materials.

It’s what happens when you photograph late at night after already doing a bunch of squares. haha It’s part of the reason why I set up the posts and do the photography as the weeks come up now instead of doing them in one go or in large batches. Live and learn!
