Welcome to week 30 of the Geek-A-Long! I can’t believe there are only 18 squares left after this one. I swear we just started this blanket. Weren’t we fighting for our fandoms last week? Oh wait, no. That was seven months ago. I hate to sound like that old lady in her rocker on the front porch, sipping sweet tea, knitting, and glancing wistfully up at the sunset, but… Where does the time go?! I feel like it was just yesterday that Megan-Anne and I were on a conference call with Louet and they pitched the idea of donating 50 cents to Child’s Play Charity for every skein of Louet Gems purchased for the Geek-A-Long. (You can get your here. Hint Hint. Nudge Nudge.) Now we’re 30 weeks into this annual party, and I’m having a blast.
Three years of GAL fun aside, this week we’re talking about Kingdom Hearts! And I brought in my husband to tell all about one of his fav games on this planet:
Mrs. Cappuccino and I went to Disney World on our honeymoon. Jac and I had a blast. We drank lots of margaritas in Epcot Mexico and got our pictures taken with Mulan. By the end of our trip, we had gotten bored of the normal fare of rides and dinners, so we made up our own game of getting our pictures taken with as many Disney princesses as possible, collecting them like Pokemon. While doing this, I desperately wanted nothing more than to play Kingdom Hearts.
My deep love for the game makes me become nostalgic for Kingdom Hearts while I’m in Disney World or watching Disney movies rather than the other way around. If I’m watching Aladdin, I wish I was playing the Agrabah level in the game. When I hear music from the Nightmare Before Christmas, I’m reminded of my time running around Halloween Town with Frankenstein, Goofy, and Mummy Donald. If the Little Mermaid is on, I’d rather be playing the Atlantis musical levels. And those levels are AWFUL. I’ve never felt so fondly of any game, and I’ve never re-played any game from start to finish (while collecting all the ultimate weapons) as the first Kingdom Hearts.
Sure, the story is near incomprehensible, the writing convoluted, and the characters annoying and cliche at times. But I’ve never been so excited for a sequel (Kingdom Hearts 3 this year maybe?!) and I’ve readily consumed every nonsense in-between sequel (Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue???) so I can get my hands on more of it. This series is basically pure happiness in video game form. Darkness! Heart! Friendship!
Whether you’re knitting, crocheting, or cross stitching this square, you can download the Kingdom Hearts pattern here. Instructions for both knit and crochet are listed in the pattern. When you’re finished making it, don’t forget to tweet or instagram your squares at me @jac_attacking or Megan-Anne @Doctor_Llama with the hashtag #geekalong!

If you’re having trouble with double-sided knitting, we have a how-to video here and a tutorial on crochet here. Want to hang out with other people making the blanket? You can find moral support in the Geek-A-Long group on Ravelry here.

Love the square! I haven’t played this game yet – I never had the proper game system for it – but I really want to. I’m hoping the next one comes out soon, and for a system I own, so that I can finally play it! I think I’ll have to knit this square anyway, in anticipation.
I’ve just found you guys and I am completely blown away! I LOVE the geek-along, I’ll be making many squares and many donations to Child’s Play! Thank you so much for your hard work and devotion!
This my daughter and I’s absolute favorite series to play together. We have been impatiently waiting for KHIII for a long time…
