2015 Geek-A-Long: Scully

Week 3 Dana Scully (3)

Whatever, Mulder.

Premeds all have one thing in common: If you ask us why we want to study medicine the first thing we’ll say is always “because I want to help people.” This is a knee-jerk reaction on our part. It’s like when someone says “knock knock.” Even if you HATE knock-knock jokes, you’re going to say “Who’s there?” It’s ok, you shouldn’t feel bad about that. However, it is also ok to throw things at knock-knock joke tellers with absolute impunity. It’s been ground into our heads that any other reason for pursuing medicine is somehow shallow. Look, guys, I’m not saying that I don’t want to help people. But let’s be real, I want to be a doctor so I can be more like Dana Scully.

Week 3 Dana Scully (2)

Scully went a long way for revolutionizing the portrayal of women scientists on TV. These were the days long before Rizzoli and Isles, and at the time it was very rare to see a woman, let alone a woman doctor, in a position of occupational power equal to or above her male counterparts.

Dana Scully doesn’t believe in Aliens or glass ceilings.

Brought into the FBI’s X-Files to discredit the work of agent Fox Mulder, Scully was a butt-kicking, power suit wearing, ginger phenomenon. I’ve seen every episode (though to be fair, it’s been awhile. We should Netflix binge on it together!) and Gillian Anderson’s portrayal of her had a definite influence on my young self. I don’t have many “IRL role models.” I live in my fantasy world and the weather here is great. My point is, I’m very grateful to have grow up in a time where I could idolize Dana Scully, MD. You won’t hear me say this often: thanks, Fox Network.

Week 3 Dana Scully (1)

Whether you’re knitting, crocheting, or cross stitching this square, you can download the Scully pattern here. When you’re finished making it, don’t forget to tweet or instagram your squares at me @Doctor_Llama or Jac @jac_attacking with the hashtag #geekalong, so we can all oooh and ah at it together.

If you’re having trouble with double-sided knitting, we have a how-to video here, and if you would like to learn to crochet, Jac has a fabulous tutorial here.  You can find moral support in the Geek-A-Long group on Ravelry here.

~ Megan-Anne
“Well, think of it this way, Mulder. By the time there’s another invasion of artificially-intelligent, dung-eating robotic probes from outer space, maybe their uber-children will have devised a way to save our planet.”
