2018 Geek-A-Long: Mystery Science Theater 3000

Mystery Science Theater 3000 is possibly the funniest show ever made. Do you ever generate your own little memes and gifs in your head? No? That’s just me then? Well you’re missing out because my brain is, like, 70% Mystery Science Theater 3000 at any given time. The other 30% is Buffy quotes, obviously.

Actual footage of my brain:

Princesscutie nominated MST3K in the Fight for Your Fandom thread to be on the 2018 blanket:

Mystery Science Theater 3000!

I love this show so much! And they came out with brand new episodes this year on Netflix!! It’s all about a dude and his robots stuck in space by evil scientists who force them to watch horrible, horrible movies. What else are these poor souls supposed to do but make fun of them?

MST3K is by far my default to watch when I’m depressed or sick or need a pick-me-up and I can’t recommend it enough to everyone <3

I like all of MST3K, I love most of it, but I’m obsessed with the Shorts. I get bored a lot, and sometimes I’ll be sitting around in a waiting room, or any of the million waiting-room-like-places that are a staple of adult life, and I’ll think about “Home Economics” or “A Date with Your Family” and just start cracking up. We’ve had an insane heat wave, and the other day I took Mabel the Merciless to the mall to kill time indoors since outside is pretty much uninhabitable. They have a play area for toddlers there, and I’m sitting on the bench while she plays and was sort of peeking at the other moms out of the corner of my eye. And I was wondering why I can’t ever seem to make any mom-friends. I do mom stuff. I should just go talk to one of them. And then, I thought of this:

So there I am sitting on the play-space bench, laughing, and the other moms are inching away from me like I’m a lion that got loose at the zoo, and all I can think to say to excuse my objectively crazy behavior is: “Pleasant, unemotional conversation helps digestion. It’s not just good manners, it’s also common sense.” Anyhow, I don’t really get why I haven’t had an easier time making mom-friends.

There have been 211 episodes, plus a full length movie plus Rifftrax. Do yourself a favor and watch Twilight with the Rifftrax. I was hyperventilating from laughter. It can be a little fiddly at first to get the track to line up perfectly with the movie, but man, once you’ve gone Rifftrax, you’ll never go back. Watching a movie without them feels like a waste now that I know what I’m missing. Mike is my favorite human on the satellite of love, and the Rifftrax features him, which is fun.

And obviously there is the new Netflix season! If I’m being 100% honest, the new ones don’t have as much magic for me as the older ones do. Some of that, is that I’m just biased to Mike, I like his episodes best. But Jonah is really good, I think it just needs another season to fully find it’s stride. It did however bring us the Kaiju song, which is justification enough for it’s existence.

I could go on all day with this post. Honestly, I could write a dissertation on some of my favorite shorts, and how watching them through the lens of MST3K alters our perception of the original content. But that’s a book for a different day. Instead, I’m gonna leave you with a nice selection of some of favorite ones. Enjoy!

YAY!!!! So happy for this square. We bought the Season 12 Soundtrack, too, just because it has the Kaiju song in it. SO AWESOME.

Also: yes 100% to the Twilight RiffTrax. “Line?”
