Fight for Your Fandom: Marvel vs. DC

ARE YOU READY TO RUUUUUUMBLE?

Last year, Megan-Anne and I let you guys duke it out to fill the final eight spots of the 2016 GAL blanket with your favorite video games. If you’re new to the GAL Guild, you can read about last year’s crazy death match HERE and HERE. Spoilers: No one actually died, but we did have a blast, which is why we’re so excited to do it again this year! Currently sitting on my hard drive (and backed up to three other places, because apparently I accidentally delete shit now*.) are 80 complete superhero GAL squares.

*I actually lost all of our great final pics of the 2016 blanket due to my sausage fingers and inability to back things up. I’m still heartbroken over it and all we have of the final blanket is that Santa photo, which doesn’t even show the back. If you happen to be the person that won it in the annual Child’s Play Charity auction, be a dear and send me pics so I won’t feel like a complete failure.

Yes, you read that correctly. 80 squares. SURPRISE! Megan-Anne made an agreement this year, she would knit all 48 of the squares if I designed them. Since I’m a crocheter first and a knitter second, my mind thinks in terms of single crochet instead of knit stitches. I kept designing the squares for crocheters and then assimilated it to knitting. I’m embarrassed to admit how many of the squares I designed before I realized what I was doing, and that I could have separate charts for crocheters and knitters without it being a big deal. So, there’s you’re big spoiler for this Sunday:

There will be a separate charts for knitters and crocheters.

While there will only be 48 superheroes featured, there are 96 different charts. When you download your patterns on Sundays, they will contain both the double sided knitting and tapestry crochet directions and charts. To make it easier on everyone, they both still have the same 45 sts by 57 rows you have all grown to know and love. I wanted to change it since our hand-dyed Geek-A-Long Yarn is a lighter weight and it would make sense for the crochet chart to be 57 x 57, but then Megan-Anne reminded me how much you guys hated the chart change in 2015. She’s your personal superhero this year and I have been thwarted.

If you’re searching for more information on the 2017 Geek-A-Long, the requisite pages have been updated. I have it all summed up for you HERE, but you can always find more information in the FAQ. Also, today is the last day to sign up for the GAL Guild. I still can’t believe how many of you signed up to go on a 12 week hand-dyed journey with us or that the spots are nearly filled. We’re gonna have a blast!

Alright, back to the reason why you’re here. I know Megan-Anne said that we’d open up voting on Wednesday, but I couldn’t wait any longer. Fight for Your Fandom starts today and you can cast your votes in the GAL Ravelry group now.

Here’s how this works:

  1. Go to the Geek-A-Long Ravelry group to nominate or vote for your favorite Marvel or DC superhero in the Fight for Your Fandom discussion thread.
  2. If your superhero wins, we’ll give you bragging rights by quoting you when we release the square.
  3. Inevitably, you will nominate and vote for superheroes that we already picked. We will quote some of these nominations as well, but we recommend that you go for your beloved and maybe more obscure favorites.
  4. Voting ends December 25, 2016.
  5. Vote often and have fun!
