2016 Geek-A-Long: Assassin’s Creed

15 Assassins Creed 2

The best part about Assassin’s Creed, other than getting to swan dive off buildings in a way that brings a tear to Batman’s eye, is the bizarre amount of knowledge I have about Renaissance-era Italy. The game used real settings and people from that time to tell an awesome fictional story, which basically makes it edutainment for adults.

If you’ve never played any of the Assassin’s Creed games — I believe there are at least eight of them now — the series revolves around the rivalry between two ancient societies: the Knights Templar, the Assassins, and their relation to an ancient species that predates humans. In the first game, you play Desmond Miles, who is kidnapped by the Templars masquerading as a mega-corp. They force Desmond to use a device that allows him to experience his ancestors memories. They want the location of several artifacts that can control mankind and alter it’s fate.

While the video game presents Desmond as the protagonist, the majority of the game play is with that of his assassin ancestor. Through the crazy sci-fi device, the Animus, you control the assassin with the goal to maintain synchronization between Desmond and his ancestor’s memories. Going against the Assassin’s way or dying breaks the sync and you/Desmond must restart from a previous checkpoint, which by the way is the most frustrating part of this game, especially if you’re a perfectionist like me.

But what you really need to know is that they’re making a movie out of the game right now. I know. I know. Video game movies are usually the worst. I hear you. But, Michael Fassbender is in it and I have to support my secret* husband’s career. I wanted to share the movie trailer of him being generally sexy and super bad-ass, but they still haven’t released an official trailer even though the movie has been in post-production since January! Sigh. So you’ll just have to settle for this pic of him donning the hood.

So sexy, right?

Anyway, we should probably stop swooning and get back to our regularly scheduled Geek-A-Long post.

Nickyscreations, one of the moderators of the Geek-A-Long Ravelry group, nominated the game:

I’ll get the nominations started: Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate

I love this game because of Evie! She rocks her throwing knifes & cane sword and just makes you feel like a badass woman when playing as her. I love that she is a strong female lead
