Hello you magnificent yarn mages! I hope you all fared OK in the great CrowdStrike and MS Office outage of 2024. It was touch and go for me, but that’s because technology scares me a little. I assume this all had something to do with Skynet. We weathered the digital storm, so welcome to Clue 4 of the Natural 20 Sweater! No Game Boss would consider leaving home without at least one set of dice, and where better to put them than inside some delightfully oversized pockets? Take care though, it’s possible that at least one of them is a Mimic.
If you are just joining us, make sure to go back a week to the project sheet and steek tutorial. We’re running on a different schedule than usual this year, and clues will be released every other week, with each release containing a larger portion of the pattern:
- Clue 1 – Cast On and yoke increases
- Clue 2 – Remainder of yoke
- Clue 3 – 1st half body
- Clue 4 – 2nd half body (that’s this post!)
- Clue 5 – Sleeves (releasing 8/11)
- Clue 6 – Collar and finishing (releasing 8/25)
By now I imagine that you’ve figured out the yoke of the sweater, above the classes is a Beholder, which is the D&D monster I’m most obsessed with. Mostly, I just love an excuse to shout “BEHOLD!!!”
I told the party that there was a giant orb covered in a black sheet floating near the ceiling of the mirrored room. They pulled down the sheet and underneath was ….. seemingly nothing. But then that nothing started shooting eye beams at them. Before they knew it, two of them were making desperate saving throws and they had blasted away at “the nothing”. After a few rounds they figured out what had been under that blanket. An invisible sleeping Beholder. BEHOLD!!!
The Beholder is an iconic monster in DnD. So much so that other games have to call them Eye Tyrant or Ocular Horrors for important copyright reasons. A common beholder is an orb covered in eye stalks that shoots various horrible lasers and one big central eye that blasts out an anti-magic beam. That beam is the worst thing for many players as it not only forces them to be more careful about how they attack, it also makes them have to actually read their character sheets.
Every beholder believes itself to be the best beholder. They are fun to play as off kilter masterminds with silly names who all seek to rule the world. They are megalomaniacle menaces from the Far Realm who somehow merged into our reality with the absolute certainty that it’s theirs. Basically, they are your average male politician.
View the Natural 20 Sweater: Clue 1 by clicking the download button below. When you download the pattern from our website instead of through Ravelry here, you will NOT receive automatic updates. You will have to come here and download the next clue every time. Please download it via Ravelry if you are able, so you have immediate access to the clues as they are released and any errata that may appear.
