While the title of this post might be Seahorse Nouveau, I actually have two patterns I want to talk about today. The first, of course, is our title pattern, a pair of colorwork handwarmers. The second is Wayfinder’s Rest, a pair of textured socks I actually released on Ravelry a couple weeks ago, but am just now getting to talk to you about them. I’m not sure how tomorrow is the first day of May. I have no idea where all of April went!
After staring at a ridiculous amount of Art Nouveau architecture — specifically doors in Paris — to design the palm of these mitts, the seahorse was surprisingly easy. You’d think it would’ve been the other way around, but no. Minimizing the curving lines into the space of one palm was a struggle. Meanwhile, the joy of making those tiny bubbles had me giggling.
While seahorses might not be the best swimmers as they slowly move from spot to spot, their boney nature and connection to Poseidon has made them a symbol of strength and power. Divers have long since viewed the unique sea creature as a good luck charm too, but here, paired with an Art Nouveau motif, they are a symbol of gender equality, generosity, and sharing.

About Seahorse Nouveau
The Seahorse Nouveau mitts are worked in the round with stranded knitting. This pattern is recommended for knitters who have experience with stranded colorwork, knitting in the round, and reading charts.
Recommended Yarn: Two skeins of Lattes & Llamas Vacation Yarn (100 grams/ 463 yards) or a comparable fingering weight yarn in two contrasting colorways.
Sample is a shown in “Faerie Fire” as Color A and “Ouroboros” as Color B.
- Color A: 41 grams / 190 yards
- Color B: 28 grams / 130 yards
When choosing your yarn, make sure that Colors A contrasts strongly with Color B. I recommend taking a photograph of the yarns together, and then changing it into black and white to see if the colors contrast strongly enough.
Needles: US1 / 2.25 mm to work in Magic Loop or size needed to obtain gauge.
Sizing: One Size: 10.25 inches long and 8 inches in circumference after blocking. Instructions are included to modify the size of your mitts by going up or down a needle size.

I don’t know if I’m the only one, but if I’m sitting, I’m knitting. So, I’ve gotten into the habit of knitting simple textured socks with mini-skeins while playing D&D with my family every Saturday. They’re easy to pick up and put down, and they’re small enough that they don’t take up a bunch of room at our table.

Right now, I’m playing a Warlock Owlin in our Wild Beyond the Witchlight campaign, and my husband (our DM) homebrewed a special Patron for Dashley Glendale. Pact of the Unicorn! I have a little baby unicorn friend named Jeffica and it is fantastic.
I love the mitts! And the socks! (And the sparkly black backdrop for your photos!) Seahorses have always been a favorite of mine.
