2021 Geek-A-Long: Clue 3

Anyone wanna trade me some sheep? I have wood and brick, but I thirst for sheep. I’ll give you 2 brick and a wood. You can make a road. I just want the sheep. So gather up your sheep and trade them to me, because this week the Geek-A-Long is celebrating Settlers of Catan Sheep the Game!

We’re upping the difficulty a bit this week with some red bricks on our sleeve. I love the way they pop.

Let’s talk about Clue 3 for a minute before you get started. I don’t want you to over think the instructions, or get in your head about it. This clue is completed by working charts 4a-4e. Chars 4a and 4e are increase charts. Just like Clue 2, this clue features increases up the center back of the sleeve. In order to have the correct number of sts you will stop increasing at some point and continue knitting the sleeve without increases. So take care to read the instructions for your size to note what round you work your last increase on. When you are working increases (i.e. you have not yet worked your final increase round) you will work chart 4a, then 4c, then 4e. When you have worked the final increase round for your size you will stop working charts a and e, and instead will work chart 4b, then 4c, then 4d. So you will always work chart 4c, and whether you work a&e or b&d depends on your size.

I recommend using a highlighter or pen to put a big arrow pointing to the round where you will work your last increase so that you don’t accidentally get in the knitting zone and suddenly realize you increased too many times. I’ve marked on the chart and in the written instructions where to switch from using the increase charts to using the non-increase charts, but it’s easy to get into the knitting groove and do too many increases.

The second thing you’ll want to do before starting this clue is to decide how you want to execute those fabulous red bricks. I opted to work mine by knitting that area without the bricks, and then I went back over it with duplicate stitch. I love the way that turned out. You could make the knitting easier and work the bricks in black, or you could add the red and do 3 color double knitting. I don’t really recommend the 3-color here, particularly for a piece worked in the round, but you *could* do it, and if you want to, I have no objections. Live your best sweater life.

Here is what my sleeve looked like before adding the bricks. Also, I LOVE that the sheep is a black sheep on the wrong side. I just love this part of the sweater from every angle.

Conveniently, we’ve already got a handy tutorial on duplicate stitching right here!

One last note: To keep the downloads manageable in Ravelry I’ll be periodically replacing individual clues with compilations. Next week when clue 4 releases (the first clue of the second sleeve) I’ll replace the individual downloads on Ravelry with a single Sleeve 1 download. I’ll do that again when clue 7 (the first body clue) releases, and add a Sleeve 2 download. This will keep your library from getting cluttered with clues.

Released so far:

When you download the pattern from our website instead of through Ravelry, you will NOT receive automatic updates. You will have to come here and download the next clue every time. Please download it via Raverly if you are able, so you have immediate access to the clues as they are released and any errata that may appear.

For reals though. I want your sheep.
