Roll for initiative, knitters! Today, and for the next 23 Sundays, I will be your Dungeon Master.
For those of you just catching up, you can read our announcement about this years theme here.
I thought it was only fitting to begin our knitting “campaign” this year with the logo from the game that started our collective obsession with tabletop role-playing games, Dungeons & Dragon. I adore the ampersand dragon logo for D&D, but oh boy was it difficult to get the design right. I’m thrilled with how it turned out though.
I do, however, regret letting my husband throw it in the bath to soak. Apparently, he and I have a different opinion of what “cool water” means and the red bled onto the silvery white yarn and tinged it a bit. I’ve decided this is a feature and not a bug. It gave it a bit of that grungy depth one would expect to find in a dungeon with a dragon.
Dungeons & Dragons (commonly abbreviated as D&D or DnD) is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game (RPG), which was originally designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson.
Honestly, I know it was created by two dudes, doing some nerdy dude stuff in the 1970s. But, I swear it was created by two knitters. I mean, you literally sit around chatting and maybe enjoying a few snacks. Sure, occasionally you’ll have to put your knitting down to roll a D20, but it’s a match made in heaven. I’m not saying you should convince your knitting group to play D&D, but once you do, you’ll never go back.
Whether you’re knitting, crocheting, or cross stitching this square, you can download the Ampersand Dragon pattern here. Instructions and charts for both knit and crochet are listed in the pattern. When you’re finished making it, don’t forget to Instagram your squares at us @lattesandllamasyarn with the hashtag #geekalong! Want to hang out with other people making the blanket? You can find moral support in the Geek-A-Long group on Ravelry here.

You might die, but at least knit group won’t be boring.

This is absolutely glorious and I regret not being able to cast on immediately. Alas, I’m way behind on my first GAL blankie deadline – it was meant to be finished tomorrow and I just realised that it’s going to be FAR too short to cover the very tall teenager for which it’s intended :-(
Guess it’s time to put together a list of all the GAL squares I haven’t used, get him to pick some extras and pull a Blizzard Expansion on him (it’ll be ready when it’s ready, I tells ya!)

I am planning on starting to knit this, obviously not as part of the GAL at this point, and I am trying to decide which size to do it in. What are the sizes? For example, the pattern says 24 square afghan. Is that 4 squares by 6 squares or some other layout?
We recommend doing 6×4 for the 24 square blanket, but ultimately, do whatever makes you happy! The GAL is very much meant to be something that you make your own.
Welcome to the GAL maddness!
