2019 Geek-A-Long: The Legend of Korra

The Legend of Korra was a sequel series to the award winning Avatar: the Last Airbender cartoon. If you’ve never heard of either, you can start here, read this, then that, and wrap it up with this one. Basically, we’re huge fans of the franchise and, before you ask, no — we do not acknowledge the live action movie.

If you loved Avatar, but never got around to watching the Legend of Korra, you are seriously missing out. The show deals with tough topics like social classes, authoritarianism, civil disobedience, self-sacrifice, post-traumatic stress, justice, and revenge. Korra, herself, is a strong and nuanced character, and it’s interesting to watch her be mentored by Tenzin, the son of Aang and Katara. The most exciting things about the sequel, however, is that it delves more into the history and mythology behind the Avatars and explores new bending abilities, which brings me to this weeks square design.

The characters featured on the squares are Raava, the spirit of peace and light, and Vaatu, the spirit of darkness and chaos. They are very much the embodiment of Yin and Yang, which makes the use of double knitting particularly awesome for this character. The pair are strongly featured in Season Two as Korra learns about how and why Raava created the very first Avatar.

Whether you’re knitting, crocheting, or cross stitching this square, you can download the Legend of Korra pattern here. Instructions and charts for both knit and crochet are listed in the pattern. When you’re finished making it, don’t forget to Instagram your squares at us @lattesandllamasyarn with the hashtag #geekalong! Want to hang out with other people making the blanket? Also, like, can we appreciate how strange it must have been for Katara to teach water bending to the reincarnation of her dead husband?
