Up until the punching, it was a real nice party.
This week the Geek-A-Long is revisiting Firefly! Mspinner nominated everyone’s favorite mechanic, Kaylee Frye, to the 2018 blanket:
Kaylee Frye
- Because Firefly
- She is the best space mechanic there is!
- She is my favorite fictional character ever!
Look, it’s not a surprise that we love us some firefly over here.
We paid homage to captain tight-pants on the original GAL blanket.
We recognized the Jayne Hat’s contribution to nerdy knitting with our Cunning Socks a year later.
Last year, because I think we can all agree the world needed more Firefly themed socks, we opened our year long sock-box subscription (now finished, but more exciting sock club subscriptions are in the L&L future!) with my Kaylee Socks, which were a passion project for me.
I designed the yarn to honor Kaylee’s iconic parasol, and I love the way it turned out. In a lot of ways, Kaylee is a manic-pixi-dream-girl, and I don’t love that, but frankly, many of Joss Whedon’s female characters are. On the other hand, she will end you if you try to come between her and her treats, her ship, or her captain. Plus, since Disney bought Fox last year, Kaywinnet Lee Frye could rightly be considered a Disney Princess! I dream of a day that Disney brings back Firefly, now that it has the power to do so, but I’m not holding my breath. I’m not sure it could even possibly be as great as I want it to be. When Fox effectively cancelled Firefly by putting it on permanent hiatus, the show was martyred. In bold defiance of the odds, the long anticipated follow up movie was great. The odds were stacked against that. Once a fandom is martyred, it’s next to impossible to bring it back in a way that makes the core fans happy, but they pulled it off. So maybe, just maybe, Disney could do what Fox could not and bring it back and make it just as good as the original. Now that 90% of “new” TV shows are reboots, I’d say we’re in the perfect cultural zeitgeist to see it happen.
Stay hopeful, Browncoats, it might still happen. In the meanwhile, treat yourself to this week’s square. Inspired by Kaylee’s magnificent pink cupcake dress. This square is for all of you that have been asking for another Firefly square since the day we published the first one.
Whether you’re knitting, crocheting, or cross stitching this square, you can download the Firefly Revisited pattern here. Instructions and charts for both knit and crochet are listed in the pattern. When you’re finished making it, don’t forget to Instagram your squares at us @lattesandllamasyarn with the hashtag #geekalong!
If you’re having trouble with double-sided knitting, we have a how-to video here and a tutorial on crochet here. Want to hang out with other people making the blanket? You can find moral support in the Geek-A-Long group on Ravelry here.

The PDF page says “Week 34” but the file name says 38. I’m easily confused.
