Camp Wannaknit: Piping Tutorial

Hello fellow campers! I have to admit that we haven’t been as on top of our #CampWannaKnit activities as we planned. I feel like there is a straight line between making big pattern release and posting plans and having some sort of emergency. But honestly, that’s sort of what Camp WannaKnit is about. I just have to sometimes remind myself that the rules apply to us too. We envisioned Camp as something that people could drop in and out of, participating as much or as little as they wanted to. We’ve had giveaways on Instagram, and there’s another one coming at you this coming week, so stay tuned to @lattesandllamasyarn on Instagram to get in on the sweet yarn-freebie goodness. Anyhow, it seems like of all the times to fall behind on self-imposed deadlines and just relax a little,  Camp WannaKnit is it.

I’ve taken some me-time to focus on health, and also to let my nerdy-knitting-freak-flag fly. I’ve had a strong itch to make some everyday cosplay style knits, and it’s been a blast. I have several in the works right now, all coming your way over the rest of the year. It put me a little behind on posting here, and also on some of the Camp Patterns I had planned, but on the other hand, I made these buttons happen and I finally know exactly what to do with them.

At a 2017 TNNA, I met the owner of Dill Buttons and told him the world needs D20 buttons. He agreed and I now have a great and glorious sweater that I am calling “The GM” on my needles. I think that as a people, we can all agree that even if we didn’t know we couldn’t live without such things, now that we know about them, we have to have them. And don’t even get me started on the Squirrel Girl pattern I’ve got coming soon too.

So this week, for me Camp has been all about embracing my inner fan girl and letting her enjoy her spot in the designing sun. Before camp started, I made some summer camp inspired knits and those aren’t quite done, –just wait til you see the crazy brioche pillow sham I made for next friday!–but this week was all about me. And me is obsessed with Wesley Crusher. I loved him so hard as a teen girl. I still sort of pine for him sometimes, and I’m not even ashamed of it. Plus, Wil Wheaton grew up awesome.

Tomorrow morning you’ll be able to get your hands on my newest pattern, the Crusher Cowl, and to make sure you are able to quench your thirst for Star Trek inspired knit wear immediately we’ll have a kit available to set you up with the exact colors you’ll need and I’ve got a tutorial for you to get ready to knit some fabulous piping onto your cowl.

Piping is a really fun way to add texture and pop to a knit. I’ve used it on sleeves, and I especially like to use it to change colors on a striped knit. Here, it’s giving that fabulous late eighties vibe that made the original Wesley Sweater so magical. So bone up on piping and I’ll see you back here tomorrow for the pattern release!
