Two weeks ago, after I stumbled into my closet at 4AM with zero caffeine in my veins and half an eye open, I pulled on my comfiest sweater and a pair of well-loved jeans. Then, I dug my Mock Apple Pie Cowl out of my shawl box — the cowl always looked the best with my fav sweater — and I thought about how I really needed a hat that matched.
Then, my husband walked in and said, “Jac, what are you wearing?”
I was confused. Like, I knew the sweater was probably on its last season before becoming relegated to lazy nights spent on the couch, knitting and watching Netflix, but it seemed a little harsh for 4 o’clock in the morning. I mean, I was doing him a favor for Knitterati’s sake!
“Honey,” he said, “are you sick?”
“No, I’m tired. It’s stupid early.”
“Are you really that cold? You do know we’re in the middle of a heat wave, right?”
Then it hit me — in my mostly still asleep stupor, I had decided that it was autumn now, as if I could control the weather and it was just as easy as me wanting it.
And this is the embarrassing story of how, for a brief moment, I 100% thought I was wizard.
Ever since that morning, I’ve had an insatiable craving for pumpkin spice lattes, apple picking, comfy sweaters, and crunching leaves under my boots. Since it’s only the third of August, it’ll be a while since I get those things. The closest I could get to it was to resurrect my Mock Apple Pie Cowl in the form of a slouchy hat. And now you can be a wizard that controls the onset of autumn too by knitting the Mock Apple Pie Hat with me!

My husband will probably never let me live this down.
