2019 Geek-A-Long: Cowboy Bebop

3, 2, 1, let’s jam.

Right from the start, Cowboy Bebop had me. Just the theme song, “Tank!”, is enough to hook you. It gives you the energy and flavor of the show before the opening credits are done rolling. If you’ve never watched it, it’s space bounty hunters in awesome ships having space bounty hunter hijinx while a killer sound track plays. Bebop is a perfect anime gateway drug. It’s what I show people who insist they don’t like anime.

Jet Black and Spike Spiegel, cross the Milky Way in the spaceship The Bebop to hunt down criminals and bring some justice to an unforgiving galaxy, and hopefully make enough to buy their next meal. Along the way, they pick up an unlikely ensemble of characters, like the time lost femme fatale Faye Valentine, a 13 year old genius hacker named Edward, and a Corgi Dog named Ein. Ein is the smartest one of them all. They encounter mad bombers, cowboys, heavy metal truckers, criminal gangs, government conspiracies, a terrible floating clown, and an assassin named Vicious while bringing in almost enough money to eat regularly and sleep indoors. They aren’t exactly glamorous or rich, but they are capable and, sometimes, lucky.

Cowboy Bebop is being made into a live action show on Netflix and, I’m uncharacteristically excited. I’m usually really suspicious of American live action adaptations of anime. We don’t have a great track record there, though Detective Pokemon is giving me hope for the future on that. It’s too early to know a ton about the live action reboot, but the casting is so good I’m inclined to think they might know what they are doing. John Cho as Spike is perfect. And Mustafa Shakir, who was amazing as Bushmaster in Luke Cage is a great choice for Jet. It’s also being written in part by Javier Grillo-Marxuach, the creator of The Middle Man, which ranks up there with Firefly as one of the truly great shows that only got a single measly season on TV. If they manage to get Ed, Ein, and the music right this show could be amazeballs.

A quick non-Cowboy Bebop UPDATE:

When Jac uploaded the new theme a few days ago, it decided it would be super cool to send all of our subscribers a batch of emails in Latin. Unfortunately, they were not secret messages from us. The website was fighting back. Much like Me, it too hates change. We apologize for the spam and thank you for baring with us. It should be over now that the framework is in place. Now, Jac can focus on making the site more user friendly like she discussed in the Pardon Our Dust post recently.

Also, we’ll be throwing a huge sale and giving away some free stuff to apologize for the mess when all of this is over. Sorry again!

No contribution is too small! Wanna make your donation go even further? Lattes & Llamas will donate $1 for every skein of Geek-A-Long Yarn purchased.

This looks like a super fun square! And I’m so happy I don’t have to work out the XDK chart for it. Thank you for doing the hard work for me! ;-)

I was wondering if you are still planning to release a tutorial showing techniques needed for these 2019 squares? I ordered my kit and am looking forward to starting these squares. Am currently working on the 2017 squares. Love them all!

We are! We’ve had a lot of deaths in the family recently, so we haven’t had much chance to work on them. But we have a session planned for this weekend, so you should seem some soon.
