Who ya gonna call? GHOSTBUSTERS.
When Jac and I divided up the mad scientists at the beginning of the year, I joked about how this post would be super easy to write. I’d just fill it with the lyrics from Ray Parker Jr.’s time honored theme song, Ghostbusters. But, who wants to read the lyrics when you can just sing along!
Good luck getting that out of your head! I sang it while Jac and I passed the design back and forth (I thought this one would be easy to draw, but the joke was one me. Take a good look at those ghost hands. They nearly brought me to tears). I sang it while I balled the yarn and knitted it. And now that I’m polishing off the edging on the blanket, which I totally shouldn’t have put off doing until November, I’m singing the Ghostbusters theme song again.
In case you’ve been living in a cave since 1984 — first of all, welcome to the modern world. We have smartphones, Starbucks, and Nutty Bars now — Ghostbusters is a supernatural comedy about three eccentric parapsychologists played by Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and Dan Aykroyd. After losing their jobs at Columbia University, they open their own ghost-busting business in New York City. Despite initial skepticism, business booms. The team acquires a fourth Ghostbuster (played by Ernie Hudson) just in time for an ancient god, Gozer, to threaten the world from an uptown high-rise apartment building. Sigourney Weaver is possessed, shenanigans ensue, and next thing you know there’s a giant marshmallow man stomping around NYC.
The franchise is getting a reboot in 2016 and I am crazy excited about it. The new Ghostbusters will be played by ass-kicking women, and nothing makes me quite as happy as women getting equal representation as scientists. :D There was some hemming and hawing on the interwebs about that when it was first announced, but I avoided most of the drama surrounding it. The whining didn’t (and still doesn’t) interest me. You know what is interesting though? Melissa McCarthy playing a Ghostbuster. That’s gonna be epic.
For this square we went with the iconic Ghostbuster logo, since we wanted to honor the whole team. I can’t take credit for it, my version was bad. Typically, I sketch and then chart, and Jac cleans up the details. Between the two of us we are a well oiled GAL square machine. Not on this one though. I spent probably 3 times longer than I normally spend on a square trying to fit that ghost into the space, declared it impossible and basically threw the file at Jac. So let’s all applaud her mad ghost charting skills on this one.
Whether you’re knitting, crocheting, or cross stitching this square, you can download the Ghostbusters pattern here. Instructions for both knit and crochet are listed in the pattern. When you’re finished making it, don’t forget to tweet or instagram your squares at me @Doctor_Llama or Jac @jac_attacking with the hashtag #geekalong!
If you’re having trouble with double-sided knitting, we have a how-to video here and a tutorial on crochet here. Want to hang out with other people making the blanket? You can find moral support in the Geek-A-Long group on Ravelry here.
