2017 Geek-A-Long: Fantastic Four

The Fantastic Four are Invisible Woman, the Human Torch, The Thing, and Mr. Fantastic. Unless The Thing leaves and then She-Hulk takes his place. Or if Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Spider-Man, and the Hulk happen to be around.

I love Sue’s face in this photo.

Or if there are more than four people on the team. Or if any of them happen to be dead or missing in another dimension.

Fantastic Four was the foundation of the Marvel Universe. It introduced Galactus, Skrulls, and Dr. Doom plus all kinds of dimensional threats that often require every hero to work together to stop. That makes it strange that for the last couple of years, there has not been a Fantastic Four. Reed and Sue are missing, currently but a new comic starting the Human Torch and The Thing looks like it might soon become FF.

The best part of the Fantastic Four is that they are a family. Reed loves Sue and is one of the smartest people alive. Sue is the team mom, as well as a real mom and great friend. Johnny is a lovable goofball who keeps them all grounded. And Ben is the tough guy who always has your back. The family sometimes includes girlfriends like Lyja the Skrull or Alicia Masters, or kids like Franklin and Valeria Richards. The stories they are involved in have spanned galaxies and Microverses, but in the end they always come back to family. Except for those time Reed goes evil.

Ultimate Fantastic Four started really good, but I didn’t read all of it. John Byrne’s run on the main Fantastic Four is good too. The stories are best when they deal with universal problems and also deal with the personal problems between them.

Whether you’re knitting, crocheting, or cross stitching this square, you can download the Fantastic Four pattern here. Instructions and charts for both knit and crochet are listed in the pattern. When you’re finished making it, don’t forget to Instagram your squares at us @lattesandllamasyarn with the hashtag #geekalong!

If you’re having trouble with double-sided knitting, we have a how-to video here and a tutorial on crochet here. Want to hang out with other people making the blanket? You can find moral support in the Geek-A-Long group on Ravelry here.
