2017 Geek-A-Long: Black Canary

Howdy, my fellow Geek-A-Longers! Megan-Anne and I are kicking off Shark Week by arguing about the 2018 GAL while sharks do sharky things in the background. It’s going really well, and that wasn’t even sarcasm. Our little sister, Alena, has only had to throw pillows at us twice in order to get us to calm down. Last year, she ran out of pillows a few times during the who’s-gonna-make-it phase of the day, which is basically us going full throttle on the, “my nerdy stuff is better than your nerdy stuff”, so we’re actually doing really well so far. She hasn’t threatened to get the Nerf guns once! And we have quite the collection hanging on the wall in the dye studio.

Here’s a peek of it in this old behind the scene pic on Instagram:

Since we’ve only solidified 27 out of 48 Sundays for 2018, and it’s already going on 7pm, Megan-Anne’s husband did us a solid and wrote up a quick review of this weeks superhero: Black Canary. Thanks, Mr. Llama!

Black Canary can kick your ass. She’s good enough to take on Batman, and that is without superpowers. Black Canary was originally Dinah Drake, but the role was taken over by her daughter daughter Dinah Lance. She is a combat specialist and undercover operative most of the time. She is a founding member of the Justice League, a member of the Justice Society, and one of the founders of Birds of Prey. In Young Justice, she is the team’s psychologist as well and it makes for some great scenes with each of the characters. Her super scream, the canary’s cry, has been shown to be powerful enough to take down a Kryptonian and able to blast metal. Sometimes she uses it to fly.

People sometimes comment on her costume. Fishnets and high heels are a strange choice for a superhero, but she rocks it unapologetically.

Black Canary is also known for being the on-again-off-again love interest for Green Arrow. The pair had been married before being rebooted in the comics, and their relationship was one of the recurring themes in the Arrow tv show. I was not a fan of how the show has handled any version of her character. They seemed unable to make up their mind on if they wanted her blond, super powered, swooning, or dead.

Birds of Prey is Canary’s main book. It should be called Black Canary Team-Up. She is a defining member of the team, and the BOP logo makes a great addition as this week’s square.

Whether you’re knitting, crocheting, or cross stitching this square, you can download the Black Canary pattern here, featuring the Birds of Prey logo. Instructions and charts for both knit and crochet are listed in the pattern. When you’re finished making it, don’t forget to Instagram your squares at us @lattesandllamasyarn with the hashtag #geekalong!

If you’re having trouble with double-sided knitting, we have a how-to video here and a tutorial on crochet here. Want to hang out with other people making the blanket? You can find moral support in the Geek-A-Long group on Ravelry here.

“You used me as collateral in a bet! I should get redacted.”

“That was fifteen years ago. When are you going to let that go?”

“I don’t know, probably around the same time you go back in time and stop yourself from turning our senior prom into a late 90s teen movie.”

“Fine, but this is the last time you get to use this against me.”
