2016 Geek-A-Long: Minecraft

11 Minecraft 2

Minecraft is one of those rare games that immediately became a cultural icon. You’d be hard pressed to find a 12 year old that couldn’t tell you all about it. The folks behind the game are marketing geniuses too. There is so much Minecraft merchandise out there that I’m able to buy my nephew a new fabulous Minecraft toy every year for Christmas. Last year I got him an enormous creeper toy from ThinkGeek, and you can get Minecraft swag at just about any toy store.

I think of Minecraft as a children’s game, but it isn’t childish. In my mind, I made it into a G rated version of Second Life. This is a little off topic, but if you ever get a chance to watch Life 2.0 it’s an amazing documentary about how some people interact with life simulation games like Second Life. Minecraft isn’t a traditional video game, but really more like Legos gone wild. You can create a simulated world that is fully customized, and even though it’s known for being a kid-friendly game, it’s just as fun as an adult.

11 Minecraft 4

Minecraft tied for the 10th place on our leaderboards, and I wasn’t surprised to see it there. Noman nominated it, saying

My kids just love this game.

And our forum moderator, Nickiscreations, noted that it’s one of the games she’s spent the most hours on.

11 Minecraft 1

Whether you’re knitting, crocheting, or cross stitching this square, you can download the Minecraft pattern here. Instructions for both knit and crochet are listed in the pattern. When you’re finished making it, don’t forget to tweet or instagram your squares at me @Doctor_Llama and Jac @jac_attacking or with the hashtag #geekalong!

11 Minecraft 5

If you’re having trouble with double-sided knitting, we have a how-to video here and a tutorial on crochet here. Want to hang out with other people making the blanket? You can find moral support in the Geek-A-Long group on Ravelry here.
