2017 Geek-A-Long: Static Shock

I loved Static Shock. The show was fun and heartfelt and relevant without being overt. It was the first cartoon to star an African American superhero and felt like it came out of nowhere. In reality, it was based off of a character created as part of DC’s Milestone Universe, which focused on Dakota City after a chemical explosion gave a bunch of people super powers. It was gritty and diverse and violent and didn’t…

2017 Geek-A-Long: Blue Beetle

The Blue Beetle I know and love, Jaime Reyes, was actually the third person to take on the Scarab. He was a relatively normal kid from Texas until he discovered the Blue Beetle Scarab on his way home from school. He took it home and it did exactly what your innermost nightmares thought it would. It came alive, grafted itself onto his spine, and induced some weird dreams. Super fun, right?

To make matters even creepier, the Scarab is part of a living hive-mind, genetically engineered by these jerky aliens called…

2017 Geek-A-Long: Peggy Carter

I like the movie version of Peggy Carter. She started as a code breaker at Bletchley Park and was eventually moved on to MI5 and the SSR, and was one of the founders of S.H.I.E.L.D.. She worked as a spy and was Captain America’s love interest. I read a story that they liked the actress so much they kept making her part bigger and finding reasons for her to appear in short extras before giving her a short run TV show,…

2017 Geek-A-Long: Artemis

Planning and executing the Geek-A-Long requires a lot of planning. The day after we launch the first square of the year, we have a planning meeting and bounce ideas off each other to decide what the theme will be next year. We brainstorm and deliberate most of spring and then spend the summer arguing over which fandoms we’ll commemorate in yarn. Once that’s done we pick a yarn and a color palette. I make a spreadsheet with the it broken down by week with the date, fandom, the colors, and who’s writing the post. There are also check boxes…

2017 Geek-A-Long: She-Hulk

Jennifer Walters was just a lawyer until a gangster shot her and she received a blood transfusion from her cousin Bruce Banner. She then turned into the Savage She-Hulk and fought crime in a torn blouse. Unlike the Hulk, Jennifer has a good deal of control over her transformations and temper. She is one of the strongest characters in the Marvel Universe, and she likes being an imposing green giantess most of the time.

Recently, She Hulk led A-Force, a team of some of most…

2017 Geek-A-Long: Aquaman

Before Jason Momoa put on the Aquaman uniform and made millions of women and men suddenly thirst for the King of the Seven Seas, no one took him seriously.

Even though Aquaman is a founding member of the Justice League, he is the probably the most ridiculed superhero out there due to the nature of his powers, but I’m here to set you straight.

HE DOESN’T TALK TO FISH

At least, not anymore. When he debuted all the way back in November of 1941, Arthur…

2017 Geek-A-Long: Black Panther

I can’t speak to what Black Panther means to the Black community. His name predates the Black Panther Party, and it’s my understanding that the party did not have him in mind when they chose their name. Jack Kirby had originally named him “The Coal Tiger” which is a dumb name and I think that we can all see why it would be changed. He fought the KKK in a story that was controversial in 1976. Sadly, thanks to our political state, the character is still seen as somewhat controversial today. Did you…

2017 Geek-A-Long: Más y Menos

Before I unapologetically talk about Más y Menos, I wanted to let everyone know that if you’ve ever waffled on whether or not you want to join the Geek-A-Long Guild, today is your last chance until 2018! There are a limited number of slots left, and since this is your last opportunity to get in on the exclusive stuff (like access to the members only page), we wanted to make sure that everyone who wanted to sign up knew that their window to join is closing. You have until it sells out or I log on…

2017 Geek-A-Long: Daredevil

Matt Murdock is a lawyer by day and a vigilante by night. Daredevil is a blind ninja who battles the Hand and Kingpin in to protect the people of Hell’s Kitchen.

Blinded as a child, he developed radar senses and studied with secret masters to hone his body into a deadly weapon. His other super power is the deep guilt that all Catholics are familiar with. He is known as the Man Without Fear, because he isn’t afraid to leap off a building or take on a room that is more ninja than oxygen:

2017 Geek-A-Long: Doctor Fate

Doctor Fate is a helmet. Straight up, this superhero sorcerer is just a helmet. Hence, the helmet on this weeks Geek-A-Long square.

Alright, so maybe it’s slightly more complicated than someone finding this golden helmet and then harnessing an array of abilities including, but now limited to:
