2018 Geek-A-Long: Sherlock Revisited

Hi. Hello. This is Jac, coming to you live from Vogue Knitting Live. Currently, I am sitting in booth 120 on the 5th floor of the Marriott Marquis in Times Square, waiting for the marketplace floor to open. Like the extremely smart person that I am, I did not upload the pattern I had planned for today before leaving for New York on Thursday, so you probably won’t get to read this (and download your brand new Sherlock GAL pattern) until after we pack up and head home tonight.

I’ll probably talk more about VK Live later this week, but…

2018 Geek-A-Long: Monty Python

It feels really weird to be typing “2018” at the top of this post. Like, I know academically that it’s the new year, and year five of the Geek-A-Long, but knowing it and feeling it aren’t the same. Still, here we are with the first post of the 2018 Geek-A-Long! We are on the inaugural square of a year-long celebration of the GAL and the fierce knitters/crocheters/cross stitchers/whatever-ers that have been putting up with us and supporting Child’s Play for four fabulous years. If you missed Jac’s post on how this…

2018 Geek-A-Long Leaderboards

The five-year anniversary of the Geek-A-Long is a lot like the first time I rode a roller coaster. The excitement as my mom drove us to Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. The fleeting moments of doubt and fear as we stood in line to get in and then the crippling anxiety and fear as we queued up to ride the Blue Streak. As it’s officially 2018 and we’re merely days away from releasing the first square of the year, I have definitely worked my way through the excitement and fleeting moments of doubt all the way into crippling anxiety….

That kind of week

I am having the kind of week that really makes me wish I had a fast forward button. Except, then it would cut into my Christmas knitting time and I’m down to the wire, so I guess I have no choice but to tough this one out.

I woke up with a toothache on Monday and made an appointment for the next day, even though I’m terrified of the dentist. That in and of itself was a big deal for me, because I’m scared of the dentist. I really am. Like shaking and praying for the earth to swallow me up…

Five Years of Geeking Along

Traditionally, the gift for a five-year anniversary is supposed to be something made of wood. The closest I can get to that is maybe the Tree Hugger set of Twinkle Toes. And while I think all of you should knit Megan-Anne’s free sock pattern of the same name, not every one likes to knit socks. Crazy, I know. But it’s true. So, we spent the better part of 2017 deciding the best way to celebrate.

We went back and looked at past blankets for inspiration. The first blanket in 2014 was an eclectic mix of…

Twinkle, Trunk Show, Sock Knitter, Spy

Man, it has been a crazy and busy few weeks! I’m deep in the trenches of Christmas knitting, and I’m probably not going to make it on all my projects, especially since I have one million things to do before we attend VK Live in NYC this January. I have a massive blanket and a long infinity scarf that will be finished, but I can’t show off pics yet since I’m not really sure how much of my family reads this.

I also have a really special project I’ve been working…

2017 Geek-A-Long: Finishing

It’s join week! Time to get those squares put together. This year we decided to use last year’s crochet join again since we liked it so much. You can see the full tutorial here. I wanted to put that here, at the top, because I know it’s probably what you’re here for. We had thought we might do a new joint this year, but when we looked at all the squares laid out, we knew the crochet join would look best. Now that I’ve got the biddness…

2017 Geek-A-Long: Nightwing

Jac and I joked about both of us writing this post, not necessarily since it’s the last Geek-A-Long square of 2017, but due to the fact that both of us have a deep, undying love for Dick Grayson. We’ve always been big Batman fans, but there was something about Chris O’Donnell in the 1995 movie, Batman Forever, that made eleven-year-old me blossom into a woman. It’s probably the nipples on the suit that did it. I don’t know who in costuming said,”Give me more Bat-Nipples!” But I…

2017 Geek-A-Long: Thor

He’s hot. He’s sexy. He doesn’t understand your human ways. He’s…

THOR, GOD OF THUNDER!

Lightning bolts and abs aside, I never got into the Thor comics. The closest I ever got was when he made an appearance in Squirrel Girl, which honestly was delightful. Loki turned himself into Cat Thor and then stayed that way for a while just to upset Thor. Straight up charming, guys.

2017 Geek-A-Long: Static Shock

I loved Static Shock. The show was fun and heartfelt and relevant without being overt. It was the first cartoon to star an African American superhero and felt like it came out of nowhere. In reality, it was based off of a character created as part of DC’s Milestone Universe, which focused on Dakota City after a chemical explosion gave a bunch of people super powers. It was gritty and diverse and violent and didn’t…
