L&L Book Club Presents: Two at a Time Socks

Holy Hurricane, Batman! Please consider supporting Huston relief efforts with a donation to the Red Cross if you are able. Now back to your regularly scheduled book club.

The Book

This week I read The Dressmaker of Khair Khana. The book is the true account of five sisters that began an in-home tailoring business in Taliban occupied Afghanistan. The oldest sister is married and is a skilled dressmaker and designer. The other sisters have no background in sewing whatsoever. In fact, the second oldest sister, who starts and runs the business, was…

2017 Geek-A-Long: Black Panther

I can’t speak to what Black Panther means to the Black community. His name predates the Black Panther Party, and it’s my understanding that the party did not have him in mind when they chose their name. Jack Kirby had originally named him “The Coal Tiger” which is a dumb name and I think that we can all see why it would be changed. He fought the KKK in a story that was controversial in 1976. Sadly, thanks to our political state, the character is still seen as somewhat controversial today. Did you…

The Summer of Crochet: Sharkington Junior

Shark Week might’ve come and went, but that doesn’t mean you can’t live every week like it’s Shark Week. Whether that means you treat life like an adventure and take advantage of every opportunity, live as if you’re about to be eaten, or rewatch 30 Rock again, we can all agree that we miss our weekly dose of Liz Lemon and we should embrace our healthy fears. Take risks and strive to live closer to the edge.

I’ve found that many crafters, whether they be knitters, crocheters, or…

Solar Eclipse of My Heart

Good afternoon! How are you? I AM FREAKING AWESOME.

This morning I woke up to discover that my cat had peed on my throw pillows and I don’t even care. Normally, I’d be like, “OMG, Wesley! Why do you hate me so much? I know you have a UTI, but do you really need to pee on everything I love? Weren’t my favorite boots enough?” Today, I grinned at him while I cleaned up the mess. Nothing can get me down. I am obsessed with the solar eclipse.

I’ve been singing this song for weeks, and it’s driving my husband insane….

2017 Geek-A-Long: Más y Menos

Before I unapologetically talk about Más y Menos, I wanted to let everyone know that if you’ve ever waffled on whether or not you want to join the Geek-A-Long Guild, today is your last chance until 2018! There are a limited number of slots left, and since this is your last opportunity to get in on the exclusive stuff (like access to the members only page), we wanted to make sure that everyone who wanted to sign up knew that their window to join is closing. You have until it sells out or I log on…

L&L Book Club: Austenland

I’ve been having trouble writing this post this week. It seems selfish to lose myself in a fun silly book, when terrible things are happening here and abroad. I live a sheltered life. It’s pretty much just me, my yarn, and Mabel the Merciless all day. I watch more Sesame Street than CNN. I get on Facebook, but not all day long, usually just once or twice, and some days I don’t go on it at all. I’m out of touch with the outside world most days. The outside world is basically a dumpster fire right…

2017 Geek-A-Long: Daredevil

Matt Murdock is a lawyer by day and a vigilante by night. Daredevil is a blind ninja who battles the Hand and Kingpin in to protect the people of Hell’s Kitchen.

Blinded as a child, he developed radar senses and studied with secret masters to hone his body into a deadly weapon. His other super power is the deep guilt that all Catholics are familiar with. He is known as the Man Without Fear, because he isn’t afraid to leap off a building or take on a room that is more ninja than oxygen:

L&L Book Club and the Shining Sequence Mittens

I took a two week hiatus from book club. It was partially because I was recovering from a nasty cold and partially because I’ve had so much exciting L&L stuff to get ready for that I forgot totally remembered, but didn’t post due to very important reasons. ;)

But I’m back, at least 80% less sneezy, 20% cooler, and chomping at the literary bit! Before we jump into this week’s book, I have a few bookkeeping announcements:

Subscriptions for the Society of Caffeinated Knitters (SoCK club) -and- the GAL guild are open for membership. This…

2017 Geek-A-Long: Doctor Fate

Doctor Fate is a helmet. Straight up, this superhero sorcerer is just a helmet. Hence, the helmet on this weeks Geek-A-Long square.

Alright, so maybe it’s slightly more complicated than someone finding this golden helmet and then harnessing an array of abilities including, but now limited to:

SOCK Club: Kaylee’s Box

The Powers-That-Be at L&L have decided that it’s been long enough since the first installment of the Society of Caffeinated Knitters (SOCK Club) to show off what was inside. This being the first box, we felt like it would only be appropriate to do Firefly! It gets guessed multiple times a year on the Geek-A-Long spoiler thread no matter the theme, and since the Geek-A-Long is the original Lattes & Llamas Knit-A-Long, we wanted to show it it’s due. (And we’ve been fans since the series premiere
