2017 Geek-A-Long: She-Hulk

Jennifer Walters was just a lawyer until a gangster shot her and she received a blood transfusion from her cousin Bruce Banner. She then turned into the Savage She-Hulk and fought crime in a torn blouse. Unlike the Hulk, Jennifer has a good deal of control over her transformations and temper. She is one of the strongest characters in the Marvel Universe, and she likes being an imposing green giantess most of the time.

Recently, She Hulk led A-Force, a team of some of most badass ladies in the Marvel Universe. Unfortunately Civil War II left her in a computer and when she came out she learned that Bruce Banner was dead. She has been dealing with the fallout as the star of the new Hulk series.

One of the coolest things about She Hulk is that she stays a lawyer as well as a superhero. She has been a vital member of the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, has teamed up with pretty much everyone, and was breaking the fourth wall decades before Deadpool. But the best She Hulk stories are the ones where she is in court. The Dan Slott run of She Hulk starting in 2004 was fantastic. It focused on Jen Walters being a lawyer in the crazy world of superheroes and introduced an amazing supporting cast. The book was fun and funny while keeping her a kick ass character who had to deal with being an eight foot tall giant and a normal woman.

One thing you have to talk about when you bring up She Hulk is her sexuality. She has always been a very sexually active character and has never been ashamed about it. The character is not ashamed of her body and artists have made her a pin up girl for years. It has not always turned out well for her, but she doesn’t try to deny that it is part of who she is.

I love how this year’s GAL is bringing more female superheroes to my attention! I never haunted comic book shops, so I don’t really know the non-mainstream superheroes. Very cool!
