2017 Geek-A-Long: Ant-Man

I have a love/hate relationship with Ant-Man. On the one hand, everyone who has ever worn the Ant-Man suit in the comics has been kind of a terrible person. Dr. Hank Pym invented the suit that made it’s wearer tiny and had a helmet that controlled ants. He also was a horrible drunk, who beat his wife. Dr. Pym has built an endless stream of horrible technology that was never meant to hurt people, but all it ever does is hurt people, like Ultron.  He is also the worst thing that ever happened to the Wasp. The two were married when he accidentally turned himself into a super-villain and forced her to marry him. It seems like any time Dr. Pym shows up you should be ready for him to become a mentally unstable menace.

On the other hand, the character is really interesting, and Paul Rudd is a national treasure.

The second Ant Man is Scott Lang, a petty thief who stole the Ant-Man suit in an effort to save a scientist, who could fix his daughter’s heart. This is the best Ant-Man, hands down. I was really happy that when they decided to do a movie they went with Scott Lang. I loved the movie and Paul Rudd was the perfect choice for Ant-Man, even though Michael Peña steals the show.

The third Ant-Man is Eric O’Grady. His series is called the Irredeemable Ant-Man and it was pretty funny, but he is a complete creep. It’s not Robert Kirkman’s best work.

Ant Man’s powers let him turn into the size of an ant while maintaining his normal strength.

People may laugh, but applying that much force in that small of an area can make a big impact. He also rides a flying ant, which is pretty cool. He can mess with the Hulk’s inner ear and get inside a computer system to disable it. While it’s easy to look down upon the guy that created the costume, it is easy to see why Ant-Man has stuck around for so long.

Whether you’re knitting, crocheting, or cross stitching this square, you can download the Ant-Man pattern here. Instructions and charts for both knit and crochet are listed in the pattern. When you’re finished making it, don’t forget to Instagram your squares at us @lattesandllamasyarn with the hashtag #geekalong!

If you’re having trouble with double-sided knitting, we have a how-to video here and a tutorial on crochet here. Want to hang out with other people making the blanket? You can find moral support in the Geek-A-Long group on Ravelry here.

I think our first move should be calling the Avengers.

AntMan is one of the superheroes that I only knew the basics about before they made the movie. So while I can see that his comic history is less-than-stellar, my only association with him is Paul Rudd. That makes it a lot harder to do anything except really like AntMan… :)
