Geek-A-Long News

Megan-Anne and I have a lot of new stuff to share with you today. We’ve been working on some of this for a while, so I’m super hyped to finally get to show it off. First and foremost, a little business:

APRIL GEEK-A-LONG WINNERS

To reward our Geek-A-Long participants for their hard work and for raising awareness for Child’s Play Charity, we put two of our soon-to-be-released Coffee Cakes up for grabs. You can read more about the giveaway here. To qualify they had to submit their favorite 2017 Geek-A-Long square from weeks 11-16 that they knitted or crocheted. The people who supported CP Charity by using Geek-A-Long Yarn to create their square, a portion of the proceeds goes directly CP Charity, earned themselves an extra entry.

The winner of the Eye of Jupiter colorway shown above is Rocketts1113, who submitted her knitted Captain America square!

“I love Captain America! I was so excited to be able to complete a square with a third color.” – Rocketts1113

The winner of the Fraking Cylon colorway shown above is Bookworm1149, who submitted her crocheted Hawkewye square using Invisible Jet and Skull Cave in Geek-A-Long Yarn. She actually snagged this win with her second entry!

“The square I chose this time is Hawkeye because it was him (technically the Jeremy Renner version) that got me into superhero movies and tv shows!! Also purple is my favourite colour so I enjoyed crocheting this one up!” – Bookworm1149

Congratulations, Rocketts1113 and Bookworm1149! You get to enjoy Coffee Cakes before they’re available to purchase in the our online store. If you’re bummed you didn’t win, they’ll be add at the end of May. If you live Ohio, I heard a rumor that Yarnbyrds will be receiving a shipment of them later next week. ;)

NEW GOODIES

Our limited edition colorway for April, Dragonology, has joined Hyrule in the L&L Vault. (It’s like the Disney movie vault, but there are llamas involved.) To take it’s place we have a new colorway on our GAL Yarn for May, Evil Daystar.

The Earth’s sun might seem like a cheery welcome after a cold winter and a rainy spring, but don’t be fooled. There’s a reason why your mom always told you to put on more sunblock after you felt like you’d just finished applying some. Our sun is actually a big flaming ball out in space, waiting to combust sexy vampires and plague insomniacs. This limited edition colorway has shoots of pale pink to represent that love you have for the sun before the end of May comes and you begin to see it for what it really is, an Evil Daystar. The speckles of pink give way to a variegation of yellows with a touch of orange. Perfect for quick Mother’s Day gifts or a special something for you, Evil Daystar can be knit into ankle socks, mitts, and more to show the world that while you may seem sweet, you are also as fierce as the sun.

When people see our Drown Your Troubles Mug at yarn shows, a lot of them asked if we had a travel version. Well, now we do! The Drown Your Troubles Travel Mug made its debut in the April 2017 Geek-A-Long Guild box as a special surprise. We can’t sell you coffee, but we can provide you with the travel mug to hold your favorite dirty bean water.

SOCIETY OF CAFFEINATED KNITTERS

Even though I’m itching to cast on something with Evil Daystar and I only drink out of my Drown Your Trouble Travel Mug now, this is the big announcement that I’ve been dying to share with the world. For a long time, Megan-Anne and I have dreamed about having sock club. We love knitting and designing hand knit socks, which you might’ve noticed from our portfolio:

  1. Jolly, an eBook containing sock designs inspired by our favorite holiday foods.
  2. The ever popular, but not for the faint of heart, Shersocks.
  3. Our “looks impressive, but actually has small repeats” colorwork socks, Queen Bee and Dancing Robots.
  4. The free to download and super nerdy Adventure Time Socks and Somepony Socks.

There are more, but you get the idea. We’re super into socks.

Megan-Anne and I had planned to launch the Society of Caffeinated Knitters last autumn, but it had to take a back seat to the Geek-A-Long. Now that the GAL is chugging along nicely, we’re ready to dive head first into it our first year of SOCK Club. We are pairing our favorite television shows with our love of sock knitting. Whether you sign up to receive three parcels or six, each one will come with an exclusive pattern that won’t be available to anyone else for at least six months, a brand new colorway of Adventure Yarn inspired by our favorite piece of nerd culture, and a special surprise.

The socks will feature textured and/or lace patterns that are designed on theme to show off the beautiful hand painted yarns included in your parcel. Have no fear, however, every pattern will be accessible to advanced beginners and intermediate knitters while also being easy, relaxed projects for the advanced sock knitters. In the future, we plan to add an additional SOCK Club subscription that will feature color work exclusively. For now, you can join us for our first year of knitting socks, loving color, and having a blast while doing it! Signs ups are open until May 25th or when spots are filled.

Happy knitting!

~ Jac

True facts, the Hyrule Sock pattern and yarn combo was a dry run to see if you guys would be into it. And you were!
