2016 Geek-A-Long: Carmen Sandiego

The time is now 11:26 PM on Sunday night. When Megan-Anne and I originally planned to go a little crazy and take the double sided knitting show on the road, we didn’t account for things like how I would photograph the square once it was completed or the fact that we had a four hour drive ahead of us after we finished packing up our things at STITCHES Midwest. But now I’m back at my Mom’s house in Indiana, our stop over point between Chicago and Philadelphia, scrambling to get this pattern up for you before it stops being Sunday anymore.

In light of that, I’m going to keep this brief and lightly spam you with a few of our pics from Instagram. Also, please excuse the less than stellar picture I took of the completed square with my phone. This is what happens when the car is packed so tight full of yarn there isn’t even room for a camera.

It seemed only right to knit a Carmen Sandiego square across the world, at least from Philadelphia to Chicago anyway. We had left a few empty slots in the blanket to be filled by the Leaderboard winners’ nominations and as it turns out, you guys love a lot of the things we did. We got the opportunity to drop in a couple of fun ones that didn’t make the original list, and Carmen Sandiego was one of them.

Megan-Anne used the opportunity to seduce people into the world of the Geek-A-Long. She kept disappearing to show people her Carmen Sandiego in progress and teach them how to double knit.

Full disclosure, I never played Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego. The educational video game came out in the mid 1980s and had a few re-releases after that, but what I really loved was the children’s game show on PBS. I desperately wanted to be one of the “gumshoes.” Me and the next door neighbors used to make a huge bowl of popcorn and watch it together. We’d scream out answers, learn geography, and have a ridiculously great time. Years later, I still randomly get the theme song stuck in my head all the time.

I LOVE this square! We had “Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego” for our Commodore 64, and also loved the TV show. We bought the Rockapella album which has the theme song, too. (Yes, I have been a geek from a young age. Proud of it!)
