2015 Geek-A-Long: Tony Stark

week 46 Tony Stark (2)

“Sometimes you gotta run before you can walk.”~Tony Stark

I am 100% in love with Robert Downy Jr. as Tony Stark. He is my favorite Stark incarnation. Marvel’s Iron Man has been around since the early 60’s, and the comics are pretty good, but basically, RDJ was born to play Tony. I don’t have any concrete evidence on this, but I’m pretty sure that the current movie version of Tony is my OTL. It just makes sense.

Tony was born into a legacy of innovators and inventors, but didn’t spend long in anyone’s shadow. He finished at MIT by the time he was 19 and jumped right into running Stark Industries. Paperwork and bureaucracy were never his strong points though, so he quickly handed over most of the administrative duties to Pepper Pots. During a weapon demonstration, he was wounded by a landmine that nearly killed him and left shrapnel embedded near his heart. He was taken prisoner by terrorists and survived by implanting a special magnet in his chest to keep the shrapnel at bay. Over time, Tony and another hostage created the first version of the Iron Man suit, which Tony wore to escape.

Tony made it back to the United States and committed to using his amazing capacity for invention to benefit humanity rather than manufacturing weapons. If you haven’t seen the movies, I really recommend them. The second one is a little weak, but it’s a fun adventure movie. The 1st and 3rd movies are especially good.

I know you hear a ton about comics from Megan-Anne, but this week I wanted to pay tribute to the current run of Marvel movies. For the square, I went with the movie version of the Arc Reactor.

Whether you’re knitting, crocheting, or cross stitching this square, you can download the Tony Stark pattern here. Instructions for both knit and crochet are listed in the pattern. When you’re finished making it, don’t forget to tweet or instagram your squares at me @jac_attacking or Megan-Anne @Doctor_Llama  with the hashtag #geekalong!

If you’re having trouble with double-sided knitting, we have a how-to video here and a tutorial on crochet here. Want to hang out with other people making the blanket? You can find moral support in the Geek-A-Long group on Ravelry here.
