It’s a human!

Some people don’t want to know their baby’s sex. I am not one of those people. I have important knitting pattern and yarn choices to make. How will I know if I should knit Tardis blue baby booties or Pinkie Pie pink ones? Should I find a pattern with ruffles on the butt or a dashing little blazer with elbow pads? Will my newborn baby be cosplaying as the 10th Doctor or Hermione Granger in its photos? I NEED TO KNOW.

So, no. I won’t be giving you a coy smile and telling you I want to be surprised. It’s a girl and her name is Lazerwolf!

Just kidding! (Take a deep breath, Mom. Lazerwolf is still a joke even though Kevin and Jac try to convince you it isn’t.) My sweet little girl will be named Mabel. :D

And yes. I WILL be making her a fine selection of Mabel sweaters, but that’s a post for another day.

Jac bought me a pattern book, 60 More Quick Baby Knits, for my birthday. I love it. I love it so much it hurts. I’ve already made the Double Breasted Jacket, Asymmetrical Stripe Cardigan, and Garter Row Booties. Now, I’m getting ready to cast on the Pinwheel Blanket. (I’ve got some really yummy Baah Yarn La Jolla stashed for it.) I’ve got a nice library of other pattern books at my disposal too, and OMG you guys, baby stuff is so gratifying to knit! I can make it SO fast cause it’s all tiny.

I’ll post pics of my baby projects as they all come to fruition, but I’m pretty stoked to be able to show off the first finished blocked and seamed creation: the Double Breasted Jacket! And can we just all take a minute to deal with these buttons. They are tiny ducks.

TINY. DUCKS.

Ahem. Anyhow, I found them at Rosie’s Yarn Cellar, and I bought them before I even knew what I would be putting them on. I actually decided to make this sweater first because it called for 2 rows of buttons, and I could use an excessive number of tiny ducks.

The yarn, Frog Tree Pediboo, was a gift from one of my knitting students, and I really enjoyed working with it. It worked up into a slightly stiffer fabric than I was expecting, but relaxed really nicely when I blocked it. I did a full wet block on this one even though it’s superwash since I wanted to lengthen my stitches a little, and also because it’s just so satisfying to see it laying perfectly shaped in the future nursery. Also, I went from looking kinda pregnant to looking incredibly pregnant overnight and now my tummy is bigger than my baby sweaters. ;)

Pregnant Megan

I feel much better than I have in months, and it’s starting to feel real. Mabel will be here soon and there are so many things I want to make for her. I get in this loop of feeling like if I make her enough sweaters and blankets, maybe she’ll know how much I already love her. For Christmas, I’m asking for the Royal Petite Court kits since pretty much all I think about right now is what I can make for her next. I can’t promise her she’ll always be happy, but at least she’ll never be cold.

There are so many things I want to make her that I desperately miss the caffeine fueled energy that pre-pregnancy me enjoyed. I’ll never take espresso for granted again.

Lazersaurus, that’s the name I suggested, appropriate for a girl. Also “Ator, The Fightin’ Eagle”, which I am told is not as appropriate for a girl but I find it enchanting.

Now that you know Mabel is a girl you absolutely must knit Entrechat. It’s my all-time fave baby knit. And you can make a bigger on every year until she’s in middle school.
I first liked it because it reminded me of my girls learning to “jump over the box” as they learned “step of the cat (Entrechat) in ballet class. Now I like it because it’s a quick, easy, elegant knit.

Love that little sweater, and Mabel is a gorgeous name! As a new mom myself, trust me you can never have too many sweaters. Babies are known to…leak. Often. And profusely.
