2015 Geek-A-Long: Dr. Wily

“Ladies and gentlemen, your attention, please. The name’s Wily… The one and only, the brilliant scientist, Dr. Wily! It may seem rather sudden to you, but I’ve decided I’d like to take over the world!”

~ Dr. Wily (Megan Man: Powered Up)

If I’m being completely honest, I was never a big fan of the Mega Man games. I didn’t dislike them or anything, but they were just never my thing. My husband, on the other hand, has VERY strong feelings regarding the most Mega of men. We had only been dating about a month the first time he asked me to make him something and it was this hat:

He wanted that had SO badly! He had seen one online, and I suspect that he only asked me out in the first place because he heard I was a knitter. ;) So even though Mega Man was never my favorite game, I came to appreciate it in the same way that Kevin can now appreciate a luxury skein of yarn as a very valuable thing.

In my opinion, Science is the real hero of any story, so Mega Man himself is not being featured. Instead, we wanted to pay homage to a really fun super-villain: Dr. Albert W. Wily. The Mega Man franchise (in which there are over 10 games!) centers around the battle between Dr. Light and Dr. Wily. As is often the case, it’s the evil character that is given more depth, backstory, and interest. The story starts when Wily becomes tired of everyone fawning over Dr. Light, so he buys himself an ocean front property and sets up an evil robot factory. Like you do. The story lines actually get pretty complex from there, and with there being so many games I can’t do it justice in a summary. But rest assured that epic battles are fought, and in the end the good guys win.

For this square I really wanted to do Wily’s face. Partially because it was an artistic challenge, and partially because I just really admire the style of the video game artists that thought him up. What’s the point of being evil if you can’t have a chin like that, and an handlebar enormous mustache? I also included Wily’s “W” which he liked to brand his work with.

I found these patterns on Ravelry a couple months ago. I am currently going full tilt on the 2014 GAL as a gift for my daughter. Planning to do the same with the 2015 squares when I am done. What fantastic imaginations you have. I am in awe of your creative genius.
