2015 Geek-A-Long: Princess Bubblegum

week 2 Princess Bubblegum (2)

We encouraged crocheters to try their hand at the 2014 Geek-A-Long, but this year I’m doing it along with you to prove it can be done! As I mentioned before, the official 2015 GAL blanket is 24 squares large, but we’ll still be releasing 48. Megan-Anne and I decided to give the crocheters more representation this year, so you can expect to see a crocheted square instead of a knitted one every other Sunday.

Side Note: When you download the pattern below, it will contain instructions for both knit and crochet.

For my first square, I wanted to memorialize a mad scientist very near and dear to my heart: Princess Bubblegum from Adventure Time. She is a scientist, inventor, and sometimes gives Dr. Frankenstein a run for his money. She does all of that while ruling the Candy Kingdom in the Land of Ooo.

I’m going to be honest here, unlike other cartoons we’ve recommended like Avatar the Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, Adventure Time isn’t for everyone. It’s a combination of The Simpson, Felix the Cat, Dungeons and Dragons, and My Neighbor Totoro. Adventure Time is made of bright colors, cuteness, and a whole lot of weird. The cartoon is a bizarre culmination of dark themes and adorableness, which is basically the essence of Princess Bubblegum and why I love her.

Princess Bubblegum’s actions, unlike most of the other black and white characters in Adventure Time, aren’t for evil or good, they’re for science. One could argue that it’s only her obligations to her people that keep her from going full on Dr. Frankenstein. I mean, she did accidentally turn her subjects into zombies while trying to reanimate the dead, but who hasn’t?

Whether you’re knitting, crocheting, or cross stitching this square, you can download the Princess Bubblegum pattern here. When you’re finished making it, don’t forget to tweet or instagram your squares at me @jac_attacking or Megan-Anne @Doctor_Llama with the hashtag #geekalong!

If you’re having trouble with double-sided knitting, we have a how-to video here and a tutorial on crochet here. Want to hang out with other people making the blanket? You can find moral support in the Geek-A-Long group on Ravelry here.

Although I’m still working on knitting last years blanket. I’ve tried crochet this time round. We are hoping to make the squares between phyisics (me) & chemistry. We will probably decorate the lab during the year with them. It will probably become quite competitive!

Love it! I’ve run out of Adventure Time episodes on Netflix (they only have a couple of seasons) and need to make a point of seeking out more. Great square this week!

I appreciate your larger dedication to the commentary of Adventure Time vs. Crochet in this matter. Looking forward to making this.

So, this individual square is about 12″ x 12″. HOWEVER, the geek-a-long blanket can be almost any size. Check out the Geek-A-Long tab at the top of the page, there are hundreds of squares published that you can combine to make a blanket of any size your heart desires. We also have a friendly Ravelry forum for the Geek-A-Long where you can find support and a community of folks that have made this blanket umpteen different ways.
