2014 Geek-A-Long: Sherlock

week 03 Sherlock 2

Welcome to week three of the 2014 Geek-A-Long, a mystery blanket knit-along! If you have no idea what I’m talking about, check out the Geek-A-Long FAQ page. Then, meet me back here when you’re ready. For the old pros, let’s talk about Sherlock Holmes.

This week we are honoring the long awaited return of BBC’s Sherlock.  I. LOVE. THIS. SHOW.  It would be fair to say that I’m Sher-locked.  And I especially love Benedict Cumberbatch.  I could spend all day just gazing into those Disney Prince eyes.  I’m of the opinion that men shouldn’t even be allowed to look that good.  It’s really just unfair.  But I digress.

This square features the iconic 221B Baker St. address of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson and beneath it is the smiley face painted on the wall in the show.  I struggled with the design work on this one as numbers and letters are clearly not reversible, and this is being done in double-knit.  But for this square, and a few of the future ones, letters and numbers were unavoidable. I’m hoping you’ll forgive my oversight in the matter.

Post Edited for 5 Year Anniversary

This post has been edited to add an updated version of the Sherlock pattern to celebrate five years of geeking along. The graph is the same, but the pattern now includes more information. You can download the new Sherlock pattern by clicking the link. Instructions for both knit and crochet are now listed in the pattern. When you’re finished making it, don’t forget to Instagram your squares at us @lattesandllamasyarn with the hashtag #geekalong! This now concludes the edited portion of this post.

week 03 Sherlock 3

Don’t forget to post links to your finished squares so we can all ooh and ah together. There is also a Geek-A-Long group on Ravelry if you are a member. And of course, hop on over to Child’s Play and show them your love*!

He doesn’t like it when we call ourselves Cumberbitches.

*”Love” in this instance means money.

I love it! I haven’t watched Sherlock before, but it comes on after Downton Abbey. I will give it a try tonight. On a more personal note, my son is studying to be a Pharmacist and I want to give him this blanket after it is complete. Is it possible one of the squares might be pharmacy-related? that would be awesome!

What an awesome project–and of course as it is charted, people could crochet this, too; not double-sided, but as a ‘tapestry crochet’ design. It could also be adapted for a cross-stitch project!

This afghan is going to be perfect for my Asperger grandchildren (3). I’m so excited. Something that will please them, I’m sure! Thanks.

If he doesn’t like ‘Cumberbitches’, we can be ‘Cumbercookies’ so when we get together, we’re a Cumberbatch of Cumbercookies.
