2014 Geek-A-Long: Caffeine Molecule

Welcome to week 1 of the 2014 Geek-A-Long! If you have no idea what I’m talking about, that’s okay. You arrived just in time to join our mystery blanket knit along. If you’re a stickler for details, however, you can find more information on our introduction post or the Geek-A-Long FAQ page.

On to the geeky double-sided knitting merriment!

For the first week, I decided to design something that represents both Lattes & Llamas and my life in general: the caffeine molecule. I replaced the double bonds with a ball like you might see in a three dimensional model. And in a stylistic choice, I didn’t differentiate any of the methyl groups, but I think we can all tell it’s caffeine.

The caffeine molecule I had tattooed on my arm after receiving my acceptance letter to Drexel University’s pre-med program.

EDITED TO ADD: This post was edited on January 3, 2021 to update links and upload a revamped pattern format, which includes more information. You can read our post the revamp here.

Found this wonderful “Geek-A-Long” knitting project and I just had to share. I will be joining in as I can for a break from my newest project. I would love it if you (my 10 wonderful readers) would join me. It is a great charity and for those who join I will have a monthly giveaway starting next month. Details in an upcoming post.

LOVE your motto: We live for wool and bleed expresso! Where I live we have more drive-thru coffee shops per capita than any other place in the country!! Love the Geek-A-Long, too; but as you have seen by my blog, I just can’t add anything new right now — maybe later!

Gah! Love the idea of this…have MANY friends/family who would love this as a gift . What to do…I’m supposed to be finishing what I’ve started this year. And double knitting is something I really REALLY want to learn. (hanging my head because I know I’ll cave…)

So I’m late to join but I am totally hopping on board! I’ve never done double knitting before but I really wanted to learn, and so I followed this blogs instructional video and made my bookmark. I’m hitting Joanne’s tomorrow for some shorter needles and I think this’ll be a great way to burn through my stash! I’m super excited.

I want to get started too! I’ve been meaning to learn how to double knit, so I’m very excited! Should make an excellent gift when it’s finished :)
